SDRacer48
Hi Everyone, I want to start off saying that I am not a huge "computer" gamer of any type. I have always found it annoying that there are always different requirements for every game. I am also not a fan of keyboard / mouse game control. Therefore, I have always enjoyed "console" video games instead. Recently, I got into Blackcats-Games (mainly for ROMS for Emulators). But then I found a game that I thought should be compatible with my old system (see sig, I love my P4 still though). The game - Lego Star Wars II. Yes. I know, a little childish, but I LOVE Star Wars, and have always been curious about Lego games. Therefore I downloaded it for... Windows. I installed it and tried to play it. Unfortunately, it was laggy and slow. I was disappointed, but I was being realistic. I was running Vista on a NVIDIA FX 5200 with Aero enabled. So I was alright with it... Well, the past week I joined VortexNetwork were I found Star Wars Lego II for... Mac. I said what the hell, downloads didn't count the first week and I was still curious about Lego games. I installed it and couldn't believe it! It ran as a smooth as a babies bottom (remember, same old P4 system detailed in sig). I was so surprised. OS X is noticeably slower on my system (main reason why I remain a Windows user) when using basic apps like Firefox, Thunderbird, and Adium. Unless I open up or completely disable the Dashboard, my computer is slower than molasses. Best part of all, is that I found a driver for my Wireless Xbox 360 controller. I feel like I am playing it on a console, it is awesome! Basically, I just found it odd that the same game runs completely differently on two different operating systems but on the same exact hardware. Especially because the usual rap on OS X is the lack of "intuitiveness" on the gaming front. So I just wanted to share... Cody NOTE: If you are going to leave some lame fan boy comment either way, please stop. Then think, and then proceed to write something meaningful and intelligent to the extent this thread deserves (which is a wide extent considering the easter eggs)... coolied
Well, my guess would be the OpenGL support for the fx5200 (what Quartz Extreme uses for rendering) trumps the current state of DirectX support for that particular era of vidcard. Remember, it was just recently (after SP1 came out) that nVidia even managed to get proper support in Vista working with their latest series of cards (8800 G80-based GPUs at the time) and SLI dual-card rendering was a joke. If you tried the game under Windows XP, using an older driver, i'd bet the performance would be just as good as it is on OSX (or almost as good). My 3DMark01 score in XP was 64,916 with an 8800GT and a Core2Duo OCd to 3.6GHz; same processor and video card only score 50,142 with Vista Ultimate. That is about a Radeon 9800 Pro on a P4 2.53GHz's worth of difference. EDIT: And no, this is not meant to be Windows fanboyish. I am typing this from my OSX 10.5.4 partition right now; I tend to use Vista for gaming and MacOS for everything else, however lately i've been playing Wall-E on OSX. Espionage724
Sounds similar to my CS:S story. It sucks on Windows XP and Vista but runs quite well on OS X with Crossover and in XP inside VMware Fusion Beta 2. You shouldn't use a GeForce FX with Vista, it has poor drivers. Just use XP and Lego Star Wars will run better than on Mac OS. The Mac version is definitly slower, since it uses a D3D to OpenGL wrapper, at least on my 8800 GT. My friend has a good computer he tested gears in xp and vista. xp it ran nice on a high settings. on vista he had too lower some of his settings to run it fine. vbetts
Not for me, Vista runs perfect for me with games, better than XP did. XP was good too, but on topic, glad to see that you're having fun with it. And it worked out okay for you.
