So I'm thinking about installing the OS X on my thinkpad just for kicks.

Now, I have a few questions.

1. How much disk space is needed? On my 60gb drive, I have maybe 10 gb free (man it fills up fast!) I'm going to consider

2. Partition. What's the best way to do this? I don't want to have to reformat or anything.

3. Trackpoint. Has anyone enabled the scrolling trackpoint on OS X yet?

4. hardware conflicts. Any known? I'm unsure about the mobility x300...

5. How do you set up dual boot? For some applications only windows can run them

6. Any other issues that I should be aware of?

Most of the ? you have asked can be found in the forums

The trackpoint works but no scroll

You need minimum 6 GB you can use Partition Magic to make the partition.

Look in the wiki for how to dual boot

You will need to check your network card for compatibility some Thinkpad users have non working nics.

I can tell you that 10.4.5 works great on my T40

interesting. Well, I figure that it's better to have all of the info in one thread if possible. So away for more questions.

I'm running a t43 btw.

I read that 1400x1050 resolution doesn't work, because all higher-end macs with higher rez monitors are widescreen. What's the best solution to it so far? are people working to fix it, or are we hoping perhaps for an Apple fix?

Oh, and for those who have managed a reasonably working dual boot setup, do you find yourselves using OS X considerably more to be worth the trouble?

okay, after a little searching... this is what I've found.

now, that ibm keyboard can be used on a mac... perhaps there exist scrolling drivers as well??

Your keyboard and mouse is not controlled by USB it's a PS2 device so that trick won't work, sorry wish it did I miss my scroll. If it works for you let me know it works for you, I won't risk my install to find out but I don't think it will work anyway.

You can run 1400x1050 in Vesa mode but not if you have the Ati drivers loaded only 1280x1024

I had my T40 in dual, tri, and quad boot but I spent 99% of my time in Mac X86 so I'm just running 10.4.3 as a backup and 10.4.5 as my main OS.

I've got a Tri-boot system right now:

1) Windows XP

2) Suse Linux 10.1

3) OS X86

It took WAY to long to get it to work properly and still from time to time I bump into a new problems. Acronis Disk Suite was the only tool I could use to get the computer to see an AF partition as an AF partition (tried Partition Magic, Paragon, Linux FDisk, Diskpart in WinXP).

I had no problem running in 1400x1050x32 for a while but all of a sudden I seem to have lost QE support. Everything is running terribly slow. I'll have to check the post above about resolving ATI problems.

Also, on my T43, I have no ACPI support or Wireless Networking. If I could get the computer to sleep and suspend, I would consider buying a compatible wireless card so that I could use this as my primary OS. (I run OS X on a Powerbook, which actually IS my primary system. My T43 is more a playground. But I would love to have everything, playground and all on one laptop.)

Does anyone with a T43 or other ThinkPad have ACPI support to put their laptop to sleep/suspend to RAM. Without that, I have to leave it plugged in most of the time which I find a real pain.

I've experienced just about every possible problem there is in installing and partitioning so if you have questions, I'll try to answer them.

Meanwhile...I have to figure out the QE issue...

I think the whole sleep problem is because it can't communicate properly with the graphics card. If you put it into sleep mode, the hard drives spin down, but nothing else...

Also I have a big problem with the intel speed stepping with the laptop, as in it doesn't work. If you boot it up without it plugged into a wall, it gets locked at 800 MHz even if you plug the power in later. Similarly if you unplug the power, you're stuff at your max clock speed, killing your battery.

1400x1050x24 works fine for me as hardware acceleration goes, but I still have some issues with 3-D programs.

I'm not ready to install OS X on my thinkpad for a variety of reasons... I think I've got a good list here for issues that need to be addressed before I contemplate installing it.

1. support for 1400 x 1050 resolution.

2. sleep mode when closing the lid

3. power saving modes when unplugged

4. function buttons like volume, and the scrolling trackpoint

5. airbag protection

stuff like that, because laptops are much more fragile and they need more fine tuning than desktops...

also, has anyone come up with an improved way of dealing with mousing artifacts? currently I get them mainly when using the scroll wheel to scroll down a page... also, anyone found a way to enable back and forward buttons for webbrowsing?

I hade the same problem with my old Toshiba Satellite before I sold it to get an iBook. I think you can just switch into Windows and adjust the power settings, then switch back into OSx86 and it should be using the power settings that you set in Windows.
