michaelbikinmac
Came across this site, and got so excited I am going to try this. I am not the greatest techie, but love to tinker. So... I am thinking about starting from scratch, with a narrow case (since I have a custom slot in this beautiful custom desk I built). That got me thinking. Maybe I could find on this site what hardware components work best, since purchasing them seperately anyway...that sure would make things easy! So if anyone has any suggestion on which "guts", work best (especially if found easily on eBay!), I am all ears. What I already have: 1) I have the disk "Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD Intel_Amd (sse2/sse3) EFI V8", but could always download another. 2) I also have a pioneer dual layer drive that boots on mac OS (if that helps) 3) I have this monitor, and would like to gethigh resolution, but don't care about gaming: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-GDM-FW900-Wides...r/dp/B00004YNSR I was tinking about one of these cases, either of which would fit in my custom desk nicely. Is it best to choose the one with biggest power supply? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811108058 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811154062 Thanks! - Mike H Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/113840-want-to-build-one-from-scratch/ Share on other sites
SnprSlick
my experience with cases that come with power supplies has never been nice, they are usually poorly built. I suggest you get a case w/o a powersupply and buy a high quality one. digitallysick
Bad choices! for as much as a crt costs you can get an LCD flat screen monitor. Also on the case , get a decent mid atx case , buy he power supply seperate, as the above poster states when the power supply comes with the case cheap, its usually junk. try a shuttle pc maybe if you want to go cheap, get a bare bones Some cases have acceptable powersupplies, worst could happen the power supply die and you have to buy a new one anyways, see my wishlists on newegg https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedW...spx?ID=11882507 https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedW...spx?ID=11903647 Also as far as monitor, get this one, you cant go wrong. i have had the same brand/type for years , cheap, and excellent http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824254029 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/113840-want-to-build-one-from-scratch/#findComment-806576 Share on other sites
michaelbikinmac
Thanks for input...! I already have the monitor... And I like it so much, I built a desk for it...! I am into photography, and for that the CRT for me is best. Plus I like to change the resolutions... As far as power supply goes. I think they just throw in a cheapy, sine the cases are only 50 bucks or so...I need that size case fro my custom slot in desk. I saw this on ebay for 42 bucks: XFX GeForce 6200 256MB 64-bit DDR2 AGP 8x DVI/VGA/TV-Out Video Card Good "succesful" video card choice??? If yes, I would sure appreciate a "successful" mother board to go with it, that will fit in one of the above narrow case designs... - Mike H Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/113840-want-to-build-one-from-scratch/#findComment-807200 Share on other sites
chevy2410
I wouldn't go AGP. PCI-Express is the way to go. If you don't want to spend a lot $$ then get an nVidia 7300GT or 76000GT. I'm currently using a 7300GT and it's fully supported. Works great. The 6200 is a little old.
