Hi everyone.

I own a Acer Travelmate 8204. Its quite similar to the MacBook Pro, its main technical specifications are:

-T2500 processor (Centrino Core DUO 2.0GHZ)

-2.0 GB DDR2 RAM

-Ati X1600 512Mb

-120GB SATA HDD

.... and more... but basically I think the main difference is the exterior... and the apple on top of the case.

I thought it would be easy to install x86 due its similarities, but I can´t make it work.

I´ve tried prepatched 10.4.4 iso and myzar 10.4.5 from TPB, both unsuccessful. Installation process goes very fast and without problems, but when I try to boot the OS it gives me a restart screen. Booting with -v shows that there is a panic kernel related with the CPU (Unresolved kernel trap). I´ve search in the forums and seems to be related with some problems when trying to initiate the second processor in Hyperthreading enabled P4... because there is not 2 processor really. but in fact I DO HAVE two processors (two cores really)...

Anyone can help me? has anyone succeed in make osx86 work in a CoreDUO system?

Any idea/suggestion will be appreciated.

Thank you very much to all of you for spent some time reading this and for make this a great forum.

I have a Vaio FE11S (Core Duo T2400), and I have the same problem. OSX installs, but when I try and boot, I get a black screen. I'm trying to do it from acronis (which does't detect a new OS on the partition any more), and on my old 4.3 entry, just a black screen. No prompt, nothing.

The only thing I can do is boot via the install disk, but that's not exactly practical. I think the partition has something wrong with it or something, because when I go to the "startup disk" pref. pane, it crashes.

VaiOSX, Thank you for your suggestion but I´ve tried -s and -x and the result is the same.

The exact text is:

panic (cpu 1 caller 0x0019c352) unresolved kernel trap (CPU 1, type 14=page fault)

and a lot of code...

anyone has installed OsX86 succesfully on a TM8204??

Sounds like the DVD's had patches, even if you thought they didn't. It would seem you may not need a Patched DVD. Anyway, you should've bought an iBook. OSX is a little hit and miss on non apple hardware anyway, at best you get 80-90% functionality.....

O you knew that already?

Try searching for an iBoob recovery DVD.

What the bloody hell can OSX do that XP cannot?

anyone has installed OsX86 succesfully on a TM8204??

Yes I have installed 10.4.5 successfully on TravelMate 8204. But no wifi, network, audio. I'm going to try different kexts for the audio soon. I installed from 10.4.4 patched DVD. Then updated to 10.4.5 following maxxuss' instructions.

I also own a Travelmate 8204. Same Problems. I installed 10.4.4 and the ATI x1600 isn't working native. I only get the 1024x768 resolution. Wireless and Audio isn't working either.

Does anyone have some hints how I can get these components working?

I was able to install and boot on a Sony Vaio FE550G - Core Duo T2300 @1.66Ghz.

No ethernet - grayed out on network ports - and no audio.

I then tried VMware install, and I get a kernel stack error at the very beginning.

I've tried several configurations, such as one or two virtual cpus, but that doesn't

seem to make any difference.

The image is from my iMac Core Duo 20", and it was successfully installed under VMware

on a P4 3.4Ghz HT.

Any suggestion?

Brand new (1 week old) Acer TM 8202WLMi, a smaller brother of the 8204WLMi. If I'm not mistaken every bits the same inside and out as far as the tech specs go, except for only 100GB SATA HDD, 2x512 MB DDR2 SODIMMs and, of course, Intel Core Duo 1.67 GHz instead of the 2.0 GHz. (And a not-so-hefty pricetag...)

I can second that installation from the Myzar patched DVD goes quite nicely but at first boot there is a serious kernel panic that halts the boot process. I repeated the install making sure I DID NOT choose AMD-specific patches nor 10.4.5 update (dropping either one or altogether) with exactly the same result. I assume some of the patches were carried out differently than in the original Maxxuss procedure that locks up the Core Duo.

There is another, patched DVD ISO floating 'round (and released earlier) with a nickname HoTiSo that contains only 10.4.4 based on Maxxuss first patch. Installation and booting is successful with this. Display works in VGA mode only (specific ATI x1600 Mobile not recognized as such), but it is possible to force using it in a higher resolution by "Graphics Mode"="1400x1050x32" as a boot option. (weird but true: use of frequency -appending '@60' to the end- in this parameter resulted in a problem so I just use it w/o that) Using this boot param I have occasional cursor anomalies but the card is recognized as a VGA PCIe 256MB display card supporting both QE and CI. Attaching a VGA monitor as a second display only works without picture on the internal TFT screen. It's quite strange-looking in that fixed resolution but the refresh is good, definitely higher than 60 Hz.

Ethernet card is "seen" but not recognized as whatever model by the system (when plugged-in) but could not be configured in Network CP. So no wired Ethernet network. No wireless network either. The machine is pretty useless without network IMHO.

Audio was not working after the install but is fixable with the Azalia Audio.kext method reported earlier elsewhere here. I actually made a modification to that procedure by swapping the AppleHDA.kext with Azalia (i.e., I removed AppleHDA.kext from Extensions not only copied Azalia Audio into it). Works nicely, iTunes sounds good and for hours w/o any problem. (QuickTime Player and DVD Player works as well.)

USB is working with 2.0 speeds for flash drives (no other devices tried yet). Firewire is not working based on a test with a HFS+ formatted external HDD in a Firewire 400 drive house. Problematic to say what is wrong since the Travelmate only features the 4-pin Firewire connector while Apple laptops always have the 6-pin version. I haven't tried using a Firewire DV camera yet. (I plan to install iLife 06 for that - version 06 is a Universal Binary, i.e., both for PowerPC and Intel Macs.)

USB Orbicam is detected as a USB camera. Unfortunately does not work with iChat (another procedure or application using this device???) or with Photo Booth 1.1 (copied over from a Mac source - not a surprise, it works with Firewire cams only).

Bluetooth is working nicely, tried it out by pairing with my Ericsson T610 and synchronization with Address Book and iCal using iSync works well.

As a finish for this long post, I also tried to update this 10.4.4 HoTiSo version with the Maxxuss 10.4.5 update instructions. I used the Option 2 (manual update) in Single User (-s) boot mode. Even though I was not able to mount the 10.4.5 update DMG image (???error reported for the hdiutil program), I used 'ditto -r' to copy the update's packge installer off the mounted image in normal boot mode and used this .pkg for installing as described in the next step of Maxxuss instructions. Install went trough fine but at the final step (optimization, i.e., brepinding) the process halted at 50% and never finished. Subsequent booting after a forced shut down resulted in a kernel panic at a very early stage of the boot. This means that this HoTiSo DVD install contains something different from what Maxxuss was using while making his 10.4.5 update patch. In other words, it"s not a 10.4.4 equivalent to what Maxxuss made possible with his patch.

It started to be quite a problem that so many undocumented flavors and versions of bootable and natively installable MacOSX x86 DVDs float around the net. People talking about successes or failures should always state what versions and/or modifications have been used to be of any use for someone else. Also, I'm quite troubled with some others not even giving their exact PC hardware specs when reporting success or failure. Considering the bewildering array of combinations in PC hardware components, it is all just useless information without those specifics, IMHO.

It would be nice to have an Acer Travelmate Topic on its own so that us fellow TM owners would get together to share our experiences with regards to x86 MacOSX install.

Marcus, I think it is a great idea to open a new thread for sharing the experiences installing OSX86 on Travelmate laptops. I have installed the HotIso 10.4.4 in 8204 succesfully but without sound, network or wifi. Myzar ISO doesn´t work for me. I´ll try to open the new thread shortly and tell everybody my experiences with different patched isos.

it's prolly the kernel with the cpuid patch that doesn't work with a core duo, can you try to swap the kernel on my dvd with the one from the stolen hotiso one and see if it boots.

The hotiso is a rebranded/stolen ver of the very first iso i did, the one with manual amd support. it's either the kernel or an extension causing the problem with core duo. let's see if we can narrow down the problem

Hi Myzar. What should I do to swap the kernel between isos?.

Installing your version (without any ppf applied) with all OSX86 hacks results in a kernel panic due to the unresolved kernel trap issue. Installing the same but without any hack (except owned by maxxuss) makes the kernel panic disappear, but it freezes when starting (a lot of VGA family do not match warnings, do not remember the exact message but it wasn´t kernel panic). Also the keyboard doesn´t work so it´s impossible to do anything booting with -s.

After applying both ppf to your iso (md5 hashes ok in the two steps), the unresolved kernel trap issue appears in the very first installing boot, and you can´t even get to the installation screen.

In the other hand, the HotIso installs very quickly and without any problems (except some hardware issues described above), I don´t know if it´s stolen, but it works. What´s different between hotiso and your iso??

Anyway I´m ready to do some more test with your iso if you tell me what to do. Furthermore seems to be some trouble updating the hotiso installation to 10.4.5, so maybe your iso might work if we solve the kernel panic.

hi with kernel swapping i mean you open both iso with transmac and put the file mach_kernel from hotiso in my iso replacing the old one. it's in the root of the dvd. If that works up to the installer and it hangs if you install the 10.4.5 update then is some 10.4.5 extension that doesn't work

It would be quite interesting to know EXACTLY which 10.4.4 patched DVD you've used since in my case using the HoTiSo image (native virgin install) and trying to update to 10.4.5 per Maxxuss patch and instructions would end up in a failed update. (See my earlier post above)

I used the 10.4.4 install DVD. Not myzar, not HOTIso, firtst one that came out back then. Actually I had the exact same problem as you when updating manually to 10.4.5 using Maxxuss' instructions. It froze at 50%. What I did was to install two 1.4.4 Mac OS's. I would use one of them (with small partition) to do the updating to newer versions. So I followed the steps as if I had a 10.4.3 (not from single user mode) and that worked perfectly. I must say that 10.4.5 does not seem to fix any of the problems regarding using the hardware.

For the moment I stopped my attempt at running OS X. But I might try again. Will try linux soon. Although there a lot of the hardware is not recognised as well unfortunately. Win XP just blows.. can't live with that.

I Think you're wrong, your dvd works fine on my Acer 4202, which also has a duo core centrino... the only differance is that mine is the T2300, and these guys have T2500.. so maybe your kernel can't handle the T2500???

Hope this helps

I´m carryin out some test helped by myzar, and I think the problem is related with the network extension. I´ll keep you informed.

Please keep us posted. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with pretty much the same problems you have. Would be nice to find a solution. If I can help let me know.

Some proceedings with regards to my Travelmate 8202WLMi:

- 10.4.4 DVD HoTiSo: updating to 10.4.5 fails whatever method chosen. Maybe the exact patch config used in this HoTiSo release would be an explanation, but this is not available

- tried installing the latest DVD available on TPB (with options in the Installer for all kinds of selectable patches, i.e., AMD, SS3, SS2 CPUs, 10.4.5 update, nVidia experimental patch): happí to report that after an initial failure, by only selecting Base patch + SSE3 CPU option my install went through and could reboot without kernel panic.

This base system is somewhat older than HoTiSo, I think lots of components are from 10.4.3 in it. (For example, PS2Mouse and PS2Trackpad not working, while from HoTiSo 10.4.4 both works flawlwssly.) Needs extra mismatching work to take it to the same cofig as in HoTiSo's. BUT: the main reason still this one is a great progress: by selecting the Base patches + SSE3 CPU gave back native SSE3 innstructions support instead of SSE3 emulation!

This latest DVD is a good step towards a universal DVD installer - quite weird that its base system is only 10.4.3...

Thanks for your kind support of the idea...

The HoTiSo audio is fixable with replacing the AppleHDA.kext with AzaliaAudio.kext described on this forum earlier. My sound works nicely since then. The lack of networks and wifi support really annoys me, without those it's like back to the early ninety's... nearly useless experience. I wonder about the MacBookPro built-in Ethernet Network driver if it would support Intel Pro/1000? If I'm not mistaken this is the same Ethernet onboard card that is used in the Travelmate 82xx models.

Someone with a new MacBook Pro model would easily check that and kindly extract the extension from the system...

Do you have the name of this image? What should I look for?

Marcus, good news. I´ve been able to make internet work. Just a little inconvenient... it´s not the ethernet installed but a USB ethernet adaptor. I have installed a Linksys USB2.0 10/100 Network Adapter (USB200M) with the drivers found here

http://www.sustworks.com/site/news_usb_ethernet.html

and it works niiiiiiiice... finally. Now I have sound, ethernet, display at 1400x1050 (I´ve tried at 1680x1050 but without success)... next step is 10.4.5 and wifi...

MaC.OsX.10.4.5.Universal.Install.DVD(INTEL.AMD.SSE3.SSE2).iso

4.38 GB. Has been reposted after a short initial appearance. Many users claimed problems with the first post. I had no problems whatsoever (see above).

Thank you for the info. I read about USB WiFi adapters as well - hopefully support for the native interfaces will be fixed. What does such a gizmo cost anyways?
