InorganicMatter
Looks like the RC of Linux's very own Mac OS X is available: http://news.opensuse.org/2008/05/29/announ...nsuse-110-rc-1/ Downloading now! Paranoid Marvin
Downloaded and installed the OpenSUSE 11 RC1 on my Powerbook G4 today. Trackpad didn't work out of the box Wireless isn't working Screen won't set to the correct resolution (1280x854) Firefox scrolls extremely slowly Sound is intermitant There's no power management The power management package I need to install refuses to do so The sleep light is blinking as a hard drive indicator (extremely annoying) There's no proper bootloader Fonts don't work correctly I'm uninstalling, I'm really disappointed with this release. Yeah, it looks nice, but not when the screen is distorted and it'll only run for 30 mins on the battery. I'm fed up of linux now, I think I'll just go back to Mac... Alessandro17
I must admit that it is quite buggy for an RC. Let's hope that by the final most bugs have been ironed out. InorganicMatter
I couldn't disagree with you guy more. This release is fabulous! My video drivers FINALLY are installing correctly, and automatic system updates is working. All the visual effects are working and look amazing. I'm really very impressed. I still like Mac OS X Leopard the best, but could easily see myself using OpenSUSE 11 as my secondary OS (especially since I'll be needing a GNU OS in this semester's classes). I still like Mac OS X Leopard the best, but could easily see myself using OpenSUSE 11 as my secondary OS (especially since I'll be needing a GNU OS in this semester's classes). The problems I have are: 1)sound: it works only partially in KDE3 and not at all in KDE4 2)Network (pppoe) works very poorly. 3)Package management: I can't configure or use it, I can't connect to the repos. Same with Smart. 4)Firefox 3.0 was adopted to soon. I have tons of issues with it. You can imagine my sorrow and disappointment, being the great openSUSE fan everybody knows. But I can't lie either, that is very much against my moral integrity. But let's hope that by the final release at least DSL connection works properly, so that I can download the bug fixes which no doubt will start pouring in. snakeeyes
I think I am just going to wait till the final release and try that, cause whenever I try software thats still in development it leaves a bad impression. Well, I have always known that openSUSE is never ready till the final but, being Beta 3 quite good for me, I expected better from the RC, not worse. But again, let's wait for the GM. snakeeyes
Is the GM the same as the final? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/107803-opensuse-11-rc1-is-up/#findComment-767007 Share on other sites
InorganicMatter
Is the GM the same as the final? Maybe. Novell's roadmap says the GM usually ends up being final. Sometimes, however, the GM has a few showstopping bugs, in which case emergency rework and another release candidate may be in order. johnniecarcinogen
Nice that AIGLX is enabled by default. Also, an interesting interview with a Compiz Fusion developer on openSUSE 11. I might try this KDE thing out. http://news.opensuse.org/2008/06/07/sneak-...ennis-kasprzyk/ I also like that zypper is included by default (though I've never used it). I'm going to hold off on installing smart (which I really like) and try the default package manager. Smart was definitely faster than the default package manager in 10.3, but it failed too often to solve conflicts.
