I've got kalyway 10.5.2 installed on q6600 and asus p5e :-)

I have 4GB RAM and I want to drop in another 4GB for a total of 8GB.

I didn't change any options during installation.

"uname -a" tells me:

Darwin wilycoders-mac-pro.local 9.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 9.2.0: Sun Mar 2 00:11:08 SCT 2008; made by ToH:xnu-1228/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386 i386

Can I use 8GB with this install?

In other words, am I running a 64 bit kernel?

thanks!

I'm running with 8gb. It's running very stable.

But it really depends on your setup, and even on two identical setups - there will be some differences in stability.

Best way for you to know for sure is to try it out.

Just keep in mind that if your rig is overclocked, you may have to lax it a bit due to all 4 dimms being filled.

And yes, you're running a 64bit os. Leopard contains both 32-bit and 64-bit libraries.

So if your setup supports 64bits, it will utilize it.

Yeah, RAM can be a touchy thing. Especially when overclocking, but not always just when overclocking. For Example: I was doing a burn-in on a new build with stock settings. Mid range Crucial 1.8v ram. With two dimm slots filled the system was stable on a 10 hour OCCT mixed run. With four slots filled the system would lock hard after after 30-40 mins. Ran memtest on the strips individually and they all checked out. Checked the strips in Everest and all the chips were from the same lot. Either set of dimms (or combination of them) would give a stable run, just not all four together. Had me stumped. Guy on the OC Forums suggested I bump the voltage 0.5v when running 4 dimms. Problem disappeared. Same ram in a different mobo was fine without the bump. :D

Hell, once every two weeks could be totally unrelated to the overclock. Could be power fluctuations in line voltage, cosmic radiation, some random bios problem... anything. As long as I get stable overnight Prime95 and OCCT runs I consider it stable.

One of the greatest boons to stability I ever added to my system was a UPS/Line Conditioner. I suggest a Tripp Lite system. Quality stuff and not too expensive.

thanks for the response :censored2:

I was running an OC system (2.4Ghz --> 3.0Ghz) however it would lock up once every few weeks.

So I am back to 2.4Ghz.

8GB ram here I come!

<if only logic was 64 bit app>

i run 6 GB but my Virus TI is dammnit unstable... glitching and desync in midi... i must use it without the usb interface like a classic synth.

i think ill buy soon a real mac pro! im loving it!

i got 6GB running pretty stable here, and one quick question. Checkup 1.1.1 report capability as 32 bit even though i know that my CPU (Intel Pentium 4 630) support 64 bit.

FL:~ tommy$ uname -a

Darwin FL 9.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 9.2.0: Sun Mar 2 00:11:08 SCT 2008; made by ToH:xnu-1228/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386 i386

FL:~ tommy$

Do anyone know if i need to use different kernel?

Thanks
