virtualbox 1.6 supports pae.

you have to enable it with

VBoxManage.exe modifyvm osx -pae on

where osx is your vm name.

VBoxManage.exe is found in the virtualbox install dir.

well, seems to boot, but then stalls. so i pressed f8 and then entered -v for verbose mode.

after that image I attached, it changes resolution to 1024x768 but only gives black screen, nothing else. then virtual box says that it´s hanging, and wants to quit it.

any ideas?

I too have been trying to get this to work with the newest Virtual Box. I get this problem on the iAtkos ISO, both the 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 Kalyways, and the ~pcwiz vmWare image. Essentially it starts up and then freezes. If you put the boot parameters "Boot Graphics"=No and -v in, then you can see exactly where it freezes. I have attached a screenshot of where it locks up for me.

By the way, you can simply check "PAE/NX" in the Advanced tab of the Virtual Machine settings from the Virtual Box GUI instead of using VBoxManage.

I'm very interested in this topic. I have a situation where I simply can't run VMWare and I want to virtualize Mac OS X.

The good news is that it's already been proven Tiger can run under VirtualBox:

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=2076

Also huge: CPU / task benchmarks of VMWare versus VirtualBox showed that VirtualBox was appreciably faster than VMWare when running Tiger. This should be exciting news to everybody!

It seems possible with Leopard too:

Problem is that I can't get it to work. I've been using the pcwiz vmware vmdk as a handy starting point. Even with safe mode, adjusting the res down, setting all the backwards compatibility flags I can think of (-f, x86pc, etc.) I can't get it to fully boot. It loads the kexts, then VirtualBox either just abruptly closes, or reports a fatal error and gives a logfile that is (to me) both long and meaningless.

I've also tried almost every combination of settings in VirtualBox. Nothing seems to work. I've tried the native and ToH kernels. I will occasionally hack at it, but if I knew the source of the issue, it would go so far in helping guide the process.

Another set of solutions for Darwin under Virtual Box:

It's so close, I can smell it. Anybody want to help? Contribute suggestions?
