The Masked Muchacho
apple seems to have aquired the designer of some of the finest power based cpus according to forbes. could it mean a return to powerPC? doesnt seem likely for macs but maybe for the iphone and ipods. Envying
Very interesting. Really not sure what's their intention on this move, apparently they will use PPC architecture in their products again. macgirl
PPC Macs again, the dead of hackintoshes... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/101011-apple-buys-pa-semi-move-to-power-pc-for-iphone/#findComment-721208 Share on other sites
Suhail
I doubt that can happen since they need to support all the current Intel Based Macs they have shipped so far which is a significant number. munky
it does NOT mean ppc iPhones. PA Semi's TDP is something like 25W on their 2Ghz chip. not to mention that to use such a thing, apple would have to design a complete phone platform (excluding maybe the baseband). every other phone (including the current iPhone uses so-called 'system on a chip' or SoC designs. i have to say im at a loss as to what it IS going to be for though... intriguing and puzzling. vbetts
These chips run at about 10 to 15 watts from what I remember reading. Which is pretty incredible, with such a high clock for a low watt rating. I can't see this in any current iphone, maybe in the future if they don't go with Intel Atom at all. I can however see some other portable platform. Superhai
Interesting. See also these linkshttp://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArtic...cleID=207401605 http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/22/apple-c...tel-sez-el-reg/ If I would be Apple these would be perfect to put in AppleTV, maybe make MacPOS terminals, and other smaller devices.
