abscheele
I'm thinking about buying a 12'' powerbook G4 sometime in june I have a few questions about it, This is roughly the configuration I will be looking for: at least 1gb of ram 32 meg of video ram 1.33 ghz of processor power How will this system doing the following games: Unreal Tournament 2004 Halo Quake 2,3 Return to Castle Wolfenstein Thanks much, Alec Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/ Share on other sites
thespottedelf
unreal tournament is the only one you might have problems with. But honestly for another 100 bucks you could get a used macbook. The powerbook is nice but it isn't going to last as long as a macbook... awesomo
Disagree, absolutely not. macbook has an integrated chip and it can not run any of those games ur best off with a hackintosh Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-720246 Share on other sites
thespottedelf
:censored2: well apparently i haven't been doing it then o.O Not going to run it on the highest settings but it will work. BTW i have/still run these on a 2.0 ghz intel imac Also i have run all of those on a emac 1.0 ghz 512 mb of ram and 32 mb vram.... Sorry I believe you have no idea what your talking about. edit: also i have run many newer games then this on a 1.2 ghz ibook, so your totally bunked. Go for the 12" only if you HAVE to have the 12" portability. Otherwise get a Macbook. Also mr awesomo... he apparently wants a laptop so a hackintosh is out of the questions (hacktops are not for the faint of heart, they require much more tweaking then a build it yourself desktop) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-720345 Share on other sites
awesomo
alright you gotta point but there is no way one can run unreal tournament and most of the other ones on there on a macbook without getting like 5fps i used to have a macbook i don't know if it is the gma950 integrated but something doesn't work well. P.s. and your right i have no idea what i'm talking about. But i'm just trying to pass my little knoweledge on to others. oh ya and thanks for your post sounds like a great computer Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-720369 Share on other sites

All of the games he listed are older than WoW. UT is the only one that I think might have trouble running well. Quake 2/3 are 10 year old games and will run at 100 fps easily on integrated graphics. abscheele
thanks guys the reason I want the powerbook is that it has discrete graphics, and is about 200-300 usd cheaper than a macbook, I tried to do a hackbook with my dell vostro 1500 but that didnt work out so now I plan on selling the vostro and buying a powerbook and building a Hack Pro type system when I get out of school for the summer Thanks for the replies, Alec Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-721119 Share on other sites
Paranoid Marvin
Well, I can't play any of those games on my 15" Powerbook, and that has a 1.5ghz G4, 1.5gb of RAM, and a 64mb Radeon 9700, as opposed to the FX5200 on the 12". The 12" is a neat little laptop, I kinda regret not buying one myself. Fine for browsing, office work and films (not HD), but don't buy it for games. awesomo
he's right for games your gonna have to go with something else i didn't realize it was only 32 mb of video ram Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-721704 Share on other sites
sarahbau
Someone at work is selling a 12" PowerBook that meets your requirements for $800. I still think a used MacBook, at around the same price, would be a better deal. Not only would it most likely play all of those games better than the PowerBook, but it would be faster for other things due to the much faster CPU. I remembered after reading Marvin's post, that my 2.0GHz MacBook, with integrated GMA950 graphics and 2GB RAM, plays WoW at about twice the framerate my 1.25GHz 15" PowerBook G4 with Radeon 9600 and 1.25GB of RAM, which in turn was way faster than my 12" PowerBook G4 (though I had the original 867MH 12", so it's not exactly a fair comparison) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-721751 Share on other sites
thespottedelf
i still think the power book will run it fine one the lowest settings (since i've done it on a 1 ghz emac and a 1.2 ghz ibook) But the macbook is more bag for the buck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-721808 Share on other sites
abscheele
Thanks for all the replies 1. I still think I will buy the 12'' powerbook because it will work great for logic express right? 2. I was wrong it actually has 64mb of video ram 3. I'm not actually buying it for games I am building a desktop/hack pro for games 4. I can get a maxed out used powerbook for 550usd on ebay a used macbook still costs around 800-900usd does the 64mb of vram make any diffrence, and how well will it do w/ logic express? thespottedelf
o... logic might run really slow.... I think it will run... but how well... idk... http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Macbook-Black-2-...1QQcmdZViewItem or http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-MacBook-Pro-2-16...1QQcmdZViewItem would run it really well.... Also when getting the p book you run into longevity issues... because lets face it, the ppc processor is out of date... i'd say at the very most you would get 2 years out of it... but maybe not even that much.... abscheele
Thanks a bunch guys you have talked me out of a powerbook and saved me $600 I'll try and get a cheap mac book this summer, even a $1300 macbook pro is way too expensive, one completely random question though. This is the hack pro I want to build this summer what do you think? I allready have a few harddrives, fans, and a osx86 compatible DVD drive Thanks a bunch Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100943-powerbook-g4-12/#findComment-724241 Share on other sites
