Asus P8P67 Pro install guide

After spending a lot of time getting my new Sandy Bridge build up and running I thought I may be able to save some of you a lot of grief and share what I have so far.
I have created a boot cd that should work perfectly for a P8P67 Pro although it may also work for other Sandy Bridge motherboards.

What you will need..
1 - My freshly prepared boot CD AndyBoot CD Image
~~2 - The mach_kernel from the 2011 macbook pro~~ ~~2011 Macbook pro kernel~~

Burn the AndyBoot.iso file to a cd and have your Snow Leopard Install DVD at the ready..

Installation steps.
1 - Boot from your newly burnt AndyBoot CD
2 - Swap the boot CD for your Installation DVD or USB Boot Drive, wait a few minutes then press F5
3 - Select your install DVD or USB drive and hit return (no kernel flags should be required)
4 - Go through the usual installation routine
5 - Once install is complete reboot using the boot CD
6 - Hopefully you are now at the desktop with a working internet connection so go ahead and install all available OS X updates and reboot using the boot CD.
7 - Back at the desktop (hopefully) with an up to date system you can now browse the boot CD in the Extras Folder you will find a 'Post Install' folder containing Multibeast, An ATI Graphics Update and a new kext for the AL892 audio chipset. Run Multibeast and select the following options..

8 - copy the mach_kernel that you downloaded to the root of your Snow Leopard boot drive.
9 - Reboot again - this time you shouldn't need the boot CD
10 - Once back at the desktop return to the Extras/Post Install folder and install the newer ALC892Enabler.pkg for better sound support.
11 - If you use a recent ATI graphics card run the ATI Graphics Update package from the extra/post install folder
12 - Reboot and hopefully you are done!

Ok I decided that was all far too complicated so now it's even simpler.

1 - Download the bootcd
2 - Boot from it
3 - Install Snow Leopard from DVD or USB Installation media
4 - Reboot using the bootcd
5 - Install 10.6.7 update combo (if you forgot to download it first no problem, just run the install package from the cd and reboot to get a working internet connection then go ahead and download it).
6 - Once the update is complete reboot again using the bootcd
7 - Open the bootcd, copy the installer package to your desktop and then run it (it's important to copy the installer to disk and not run it from the cd otherwise your sound will not work - this a bug in the postinstall script that I haven't been able to track down yet.
8 - Reboot without the bootcd.

Job done and everything should be working

The package will install the new kernel, the sandy bridge friendly chameleon boot loader and all of the relevant kext's for this motherboard. Additionally it installs all of the new ATI kexts providing native 5800 and 6800 support.

I have tested the bootcd pretty extensively by formatting my own Snow Leopard install and rebuilding it from scratch using only this bootcd and the original snow leopard install DVD so I am pretty confident that it works.

It didn´t work... The install boots fine, but when I go to Disk Utility, it stops there, "gathering disk info" or something like this. My disks are in AHCI mode, don´t know what´s going on...

Unfortunately I can't replicate that error. I have run the boot cd on 2 pc's here and both start the installer and run the disk utility just fine. I hate to say it but it sounds more like you have a hard disk issue of some sort

Trying this method now.

i7 2600K, Asus P8P67, 8GB Corsair XMS3, HD5870 2GB Eyefinity.

iBoot_legacy method didn't even get me to the install screen, this did. So I'm hopeful.

Will let you know my progress.

Update: Booted in, successfully. Installing 10.6.6 Combo update and etc now.

Mach_kernel cannot be replaced because it's invisible.

So I had to use Bridge Helper and installed Nawcoms kernel.

I'm stuck at the Apple Logo with a Spinning wheel after trying to boot. No yet KP though.

You shouldn't have done that - all you needed to do was run 'ShowAllFiles' (it's an application that would have been installed if you selected the options from multibeast detailed in the images) and then delete or rename the original mach_kernel from your root drive before replacing it with the new one.

If I were you I would boot using the boot cd again, reinstall the sandy bridge version of chameleon using multibeast, run showallfiles to show all your hidden files, replace the kernel with the newer one (you may have to delete or rename the current one first). You can then run showallfiles again to rehide the hidden files. Then check your com.apple.boot.plist to make sure it's not looking for the legacy_kernel (if it is change it back to mach_kernel).

It´s a bit frustrating. My last PC (AMD X2, foxconn MB, 2GB) used to run OSX SL fine.
And now, this. I will try to mess with the bios, but I´m in trouble here, since the P8P67 has a bug with the MS wireless receiver (mouse does not respond, keyboard is jumpy all the time, it´s a real pain trying to set things this way).
You guys are installing with SATA set to AHCI, right?

Thanks Andy. I just did that.

Replaced Mach_kernel properly this time, but I cant boot. I get a blank screen and my 5870 fan spins up to 100%.

What kernel flags have you set with the boot.iso?

Coz I can boot with the CD perfectly well, but can't with Chameleon RC5.

Now I gotta get QE/CI working on my 5870.

To get your 5870 working install the ATI Graphics Update package from the extra/post install folder on the CD and make sure GraphicsEnabler is set to no in your com.apple.boot.plist - reboot and it should be working just fine.

The boot CD uses no kernel flags at all btw - you dont need them if you use the new kernal and the sandy bridge chameleon version as detailed in the first post.

One thing I forgot to mention in the guide is that the Boot CD contains an smbios file that if copied to your extras folder would have avoided the need to delete the AppleTyMCEDriver.kext.

I will update the guide later because there are a few things I should have made clearer.

Yup SATA set to AHCI, with the option roms disabled as I don't use raid.

On my system yes absolutely. I wont lie to you I have had plenty of reports from people telling me it doesn't work for them which I honestly can't explain. It works for me and I thought it would work for and help others otherwise I wouldnt have posted it.

I've updated the initial post because I have created a new version of the bootcd. Tonymac moaned at me for including multibeast on the cd as apparently they don't allow anybody else to distribute it (bit rich considering it's content) :wacko:

.

As a result I got rid of multibeast altogether and built a single package to install all of the kexts, the bootloader and kernel which in turn makes the disk a smaller download and a lot simpler to use - i.e you boot from it, install snow leopard, install the latest updates then run one single package!

Let me know if any of you find it useful!

I've been trying to get my P8P67 Pro build to work well for the past week now. I've even posted my build experience on TonyMac's site:

I've been able to have my general install to work just fine, EXCEPT getting the sound to work properly. The closest I've have gotten is an "Under-Water"-like scrambled sound... UNTIL... I have seen your new install package.

Lately I've been installing my OSX with iboot and updating it to only 10.6.6. I've been using different combinations of audio enablers through Multibeast, referencing various threads on TonyMac's forum and haven't been successful. In my recent install, just to try it out, I actually copied your install package on my desktop, ran it, and rebooted with you andyboot cd and the sound finally worked!

You're awsome for that! BUT.... I realized that your package has native ATI support. I'm trying to build my system with a EVGA NVidia GTX 460. So even when the sound worked, I could not adjust the resolution beyond 800x600 after installing your package (Please excuse me for the noob mistake).

Please excuse me for being such a noob, as this is my first x86 build. All I would like to do is get my sound to work right along with my video. I'm asking your advice on the sound installation process. Like, what to exactly check off on Multibeast after my update? Or what right steps to take to have my on board sound working properly.

Unless you can create a package that's NVidia card friendly as well?

I'm a professional Multimedia artist and would love to create an install video for the P8P67 Pro board. I will definitely acknowledge your credit for helping me with my sound issue. Thanks so much for your help and this great thread!

I had audio issues on a GA-P67M-UD3,and the solution was,put at boot "busratio=30"

Pdt.. don't forget move to the left the input gain in the Preference Pane to avoid the rain sound)

The best bet for your sound problem is to use multibeast and select the following options..

System Utilities
-Rebuild Caches (Select)
-Repair Permissions (Select)

Drivers & Bootloaders
-Kext & Enablers
--Audio
---Realtek ALCxx
----ALC8xxHDA (Select)
----AppleHDA Rollback (Select)
----Non-DSDT HDAEnabler
-----ALC892 (Select)

Once complete reboot and you should have basic stereo sound.

Then go to http://www.tonymacx8...hp?f=79&t=14725 and install the beta kexts to enable full support for all speakers (select the first of the three speaker options when you run the installer).

The audio problem is just a bug in the installer script, usually running it again from the desktop will fix it. It does appear to install everything correctly but for some weird reason it sometimes doesn't set the permissions properly or load the kexts. If running the installer again doesn't fix it then just run kext utlity in full service mode (i.e. just double click it) that usually does the job.

Just my input here in relation to your installation/boot cd .

Your boot cd will not work with a normal OSX installation CD.  For me it only works with a Macbook Pro installation CD . Thats is what I have found anyway . I have also noticed that for some strange reason when I run certain software eg. Geekbench .  The installer quits  unexpectedly on launch when I used your boot cd.

However I have also installed the original OSX Install CD on another HDD using another  boot CD.  (not using your boot cd  or the Macbook Pro install CD)  that seems to not have this issue. So I am not sure if the problem is the boot cd  or the OSX installation CD that causes this . (original OSX Installation disk vs the MAcBook Pro OSX Installation disk.

Sorry if this sounds confusing
