x86 has nothing to do with it. It is just a type of chip architecture named from the days of 286, 386, 486 processors, etc. Even pentium 4 chips are N86 family Y stepping Z.

OS X is a 32 bit operating system, and will run fine on a 64 bit AMD chip (just like the 32 bit version of XP)

sjoer- Check the Wiki for common such boot problems (and make sure you patched your DVD) :)
