Ok so i wasn't concerned about this until now...

so i finally finished installing OSX 10.5.2 Leopard (Kalyway) on my laptop, got the battery meter working, and everything was great... so i put it to sleep

i then opened it back up and it powered on with a roar of the fan gusting out hot air of the side of my laptop. I was able to install leopard and work on it for hours and come to think of it, i dont remember hearing the fan at all during that time ? (i may be mistaken)

is it possible that the fan won't work until i put the laptop to sleep and wake it back up again..

and one more thing... is there a program (like one for dashboard) that will allow me to monitor cpu temps and such that will work with osx86??

thanks in advance

I found this in a thread thread posted by a whodini. My laptop is definitely running MUCH cooler now, but I cant get the temp monitor to work anymore. Did the trick for me. Now if I could get that temp monitor working

Here's a simple and brilliant way to fix the overheating problem. REMOVE the temperature plugin by deleting the AppleACPIThermal.kext from inside the AppleACPIxxxxx.kext, where xxxxx is Family or equivalent. This means that the motherboard will take over the thermal management. I tried it and using Temperature Monitor application, whenever it gets to 40 degrees C, the fan turns on until it gets to 32 C. Works like a champ. Kudos to http://paulicat.freeflux.net/ for the idea. I dont understand at all, but this laptop with a 1.4 Celeron is faster (my perception using it) than my macbook core duo! I actually liked it so much I went ahead on bot the Apple. I still like the HP better, except that it doesnt have a webcam built in.

Actually I now got the cpu monitor working properly by clearing the kextcache (booting with -f) Gonna leave my comp on for a bit now. Before removing the kext I was averaging 71/72 C. And now with startup Im going down very slowly. Gonna wait 15 mins and then post back. Patiently waiting, and it hit 59 C. Good progress so far, now I just need to figure out how the guy gets the exhaust fan to turn on until it gets to 32. Im off to sleep. Any input would greatly be appreciated

post edit: After leaving it on this morning, it stays at 59-62, solid. I dont think its possible to get it any cooler. I'll boot into vista and see how cool it gets. So this thermal kext will be permanently removed

thanks Doctrade,

The solution works for my laptop. the fan works better now.

Now I dont have to worry about the temperature anymore.

EDIT: Ah.. I might be just got lucky several times I boot the fan works.

But then I found that the problem is still there.

Will check the post as informed below. thanks !

Not to intrude but you guys did not see my thread completely dedicated to fan issues?

I am trying to fix a long standing cold boot fan issue and could use all the help I can get to solve it. Deleting AppleACPIThermal.kext is an old fix and does not address all fan issues with laptops. If any of you still have fan issues on cold boot especially, please join my discussion to solve this problem! Hopefully we can come up with a fix. My fans are fine as long as I reboot 3 times to get the fans to kick on before entering OSX. Otherwise I risk a potential overheat and thermal meltdown.

After a few days I too noticed this didnt work, epecially after some heavy use. So I bit the bullet and installed 10.5.2 from the kalyway dvd with speedstep kernel. And now my laptop never gets above 60C with full usage. The only thing is the fan is ALWAYS on, its a bit noisy.

I'll have a look at your thread diabolic.
