Unklemac
Hi everyone. So im about to sell my beloved Macbook Pro 2.16Ghz, since its not really cutting it compared to what I can get in a Hackintosh I mainly use my computer for Lightroom + Photoshop, editing RAW files and TIFF/PSD files with many layers. I am wondering what if I can safely clock this hardware, from 2.66Ghz to 3.0Ghz ? Also, will it run at 1333 FSB ? And I guess Sata drives is not gonna cause any fuss ? Or USB Dongle ? With my MBP I usually have my Wacom tablet and wireless mac keyboard (the new one), would this make any trouble ? This is what I have been writing down, ready to be purchased as soon as money allow it (within 2 months hopefully). Antec case Silent + Chill 520W Silent Gigabit EP35 DS4 Quad 2.66 Penryn with Thermalright 120 Extreme 8GB Gskill PC-8000 Ram 8800GT Sparkle (Passive) 1 x 74 Raptor Sata in Raid 0 (I already have a 74GB raptor, and 500GB seagate ready to be used.) 1 x 500GB Sata Bluetooth dongle DVD DL (not sure which one is good) Anything else im missing ? Looking very much forward to your answers, and thank you for this great forum Sincerly Unklemac Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/97170-about-to-buy-new-system-overclocking/ Share on other sites
ironicall
The Penryn chip will hit 3.ghz easy. And with that cooling I would say 3.6/3.8 would definitely be possible. I have a Q6600 @ 3.6 with Arctic freezer pro so you should be fine. SATA won't be a problem and I can't see a usb dongle being much of an issue either. As for DVD get whatever is fastest mate. That setup will make for a lovely and fast Hackintosh Cheers Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/97170-about-to-buy-new-system-overclocking/#findComment-693923 Share on other sites
Unklemac
Thanks for the fast reply Im happy that my small research hasn't been in vein. Okay, I actually forgot about wireless networking (to Wifi Router), is it possible ? Last question, is the max FSB 1000mhz of my Gskill Ram, or is it 1333mhz which I think is maximum of the Motherboard ? Would love to get a hugh boost in FSB from my 667mhz Macbook Pro im using right now. Thanks again for the quick reply! Very appreciated. EDIT: I just saw your video on Youtube Ironicall - and was wondering why you highlight things in "about this mac" when the video is so far away that I cant read it (I really want too!). Otherwise cool video showing the real stuff instead of just Dashboard. iTunes works! scottath
Hi, I've got the GA-P35-DS4 with a G0 Q6600, that i run daily at 3.6ghz under a TRUE also, My temps are very low and it is a good combination, With my board running th Q6600 at 8*450, my FSB is at 1600mhz [on a board that "MAX FSB" is 1333mhz, The max FSB is only for the processors default fsb [1333 would be the new 45nm intel chips] Ask anything else, am really good with overclocking on this board or PM me Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/97170-about-to-buy-new-system-overclocking/#findComment-694363 Share on other sites
Unklemac
Thanks for chiming in Scottath, it sounds like you got a speedy machine there Actually, im a bit confused now. Since I actually got a "ok" for loaning the money, so I can now order as I please. That led me to getting a Dual Core instead of a Quad Core, since Photoshop + Lightroom is not really doing THAT much better, with a quad core according to tests I read. I went with a Core 2 Duo E8400 3 GHz, which I had to pay a premium to get it (sold out everywhere, until May here in denmark). It seems this can be clocked quite easily to 4Ghz with air, according to gazillion reviews on Newegg. So with that out of the way, I also ordered 4 x 2GB G.Skill PC-8000 (1000mhz) Ram, which should come next week. What I am really worried about is if my PSU has the right cables and the reach inside the case. Also I am trying to make a whisper quiet system, so im not sure whether to go with the Chill innovation 520W or Corsair 620W HTX ? I have been using mac the last 5 years, and the last time I had a PC, noise levels was horrid (even on mac), so its important that there is a weak link that makes soooo much noise (to make my other silent purchases pointless). If everything goes well, then I have all items needed to build my Tower before next weekend Scottath do you use Wireless card of any kind ? I would very much like to have a dual boot system, so I can do normal clock settings in Mac OS X, and have Windows ready to do all the stresstesting (prime 95?) when I start to overclock it. Im sure I will be a pain in the ass with a million questions when the time comes Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/97170-about-to-buy-new-system-overclocking/#findComment-694671 Share on other sites

Yeah the video quality was {censored}. What I highlighted was my gfx card and and how it was fully supported. Will be doing another one soon. I just encoded I Am Legend for my PSP and it only took ten minutes with settings on high quality, Theres nothing like a quad core at 3.6 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/97170-about-to-buy-new-system-overclocking/#findComment-694892 Share on other sites
scottath
I almost got the E8400, but whent for quad because i am going to be doing some video editing - but yeah, the E8400's are cerazy overclockers Actually my system is even more powerful than what's in my sig, i just recieved 2 HD3870's for crossfire - which means i will proably sell my board for a X38 version of it Personally i have a HX-620 and it is BRILLIANT. it is dead silent to me, but that is with the rest of my system buzzing away - Highly Recommended. I don't use wireless [yet] but am looking at it. even with my 2 HD3870's there is still a PCI and 2 PCI-E slots free PM me when you get to overclocking it, got some good guides and knowledge on it with this board. [Even though i'm only 16] Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/97170-about-to-buy-new-system-overclocking/#findComment-695083 Share on other sites
Unklemac
Yeah with Video editing, then you definitely want the Quad. The E8400 was cheaper and available, so that was the deciding factor, since I want this system up and running next week. I will either pick the HX-620 or the Chill Innovation if they manage to write me back before next week about if it fits with the Antec P182 Casing (I think the cables need to stretch further for this one). Would there be any reason for me to get X38 instead of P35 ? How come your swapping it ? Since im buying new, I would hate to have to sell in less then 5 months because I should have bought the "other" one instead They are priced the same in denmark those boards, P35's X38's and I think also X48's. Rest assured I will write you when everything has arrived Then I will give you my MSN mail, if you want to chat about it on messenger ?
