I just received a tangerine iBook that wouldn't recognize boot devices. I diagnosed this problem as a failed hard drive. I replaced the hard drive with a working hard drive with Mac OS 9 on it. I wanted to upgrade it to Mac OS X using my Panther DVD. The internal optical drive in the iBook is a CD reader only and therefore, it can't read DVDs. I plugged in an external DVD drive and tried to boot from there. It started booting into the installer but then after a while, the Apple logo on the boot screen is replaced by a prohibitory sign.

It's strange because I successfully installed Mac OS X 10.4 onto an indigo iBook using the same external DVD drive but Panther doesn't seem to work. Can someone give me some advice?

When i was looking through the forum for an interesting thread, i saw this one and the thread looked like "Can't install OS X on i..."

My heart went in my mouth hoping it was not an iPod....
