AC97 (SoundMAX 198x) on board Audio & Philips DVD+/-RW DVD 8170 - Both are not working

I am using Mac OSX 10.4.3 on a Dell Dimension 1100.

I have been reading tons of articles on the SoundMAX/AC97 Audio issues and how to fix them and nothing I have to look for seems to be showing up. The OS also does not recognize my Philips DVD+/-RW DVD8170 burner.

Does anyone have any clues or ideas on how to get these working? I am really excited to be on Mac and off Windows XP, and I would like to stay...but if I cannot get these items working, I will have to go back sad to say.

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!!

PS - Using MacGirl's modified AppleAC97Audio.kext I have the AC97 device showing up, the Maser volume is greyed out, and channels 1 and 2 are the only available to manipulate - but still, no audio at all - even for fun tried the line in and mic ports just to see, all ATI drivers deleted even though it's onboard Intel graphics...hope this helps as to where I stand....

I to have had this problem but downloaded the the appleac97audio.kext was a zipped file and followed the instructions in the post that can be found on this forum

I have the soundmax AD1980 sound card/chip so had to find the string ADS7x has for of them and replaced one with ADS70 - might be different in your case you need to find manufacture specs if you know exactly what you have -Google is a friend?

Cant post the link just yet waiting for verification DCMA {censored} etc etc

There is a legal source of drivers, many are interchangible with OS X 10.4.3 (and later) drivers. Find "Darwin project 8.01" via web search and download your x86 install CD image, burn (or mount) that, then swap its System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext for the one that's not working, make sure you fix ownership and permissions, flush the caches, reboot and pray for a miracle.

I have an entry in Genius Bar with all the relevant and legal, even some Apple-hosted, links.

Dude! Something different happened!!! I went to get Darwin 8.01 at your suggestion, got the AC97 out of there, tried to install it and here were the results....

cpe-24-58-235-75:/Users/paul root# cp -R /Users/paul/Desktop/AppleAC97Audio.kext /System/Library/Extensions/

cpe-24-58-235-75:/Users/paul root# kextload -t /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext

kextload: extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext appears to be valid

16IOAC97AudioCodec is not compatible with its superclass, 9IOService superclass changed?

kextload: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext

load failed for extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext

(run kextload with -t for diagnostic output)

This is certainly different.....

What do you think the next step is??????

sad to say..nothing at all. Says AC97 is loaded....no audio from the speakers..have tried just about everything everyone has suggested...

I am at a total loss getting sound to work

I had the same issue I can see the speaker icon in the taskbar but no audio

until I plugged the speakers in the front audio port, works like a dream

As far as your DVD burner, download Patchburn. Search google for it. It will fix your System, so OS X sees your Drive as if it were an Apple Super-Drive. :dev:
