Patrick Vick
I booted up off the DVD I made with kalyway_leo_10.5.1.iso and it gave me a prompt showing me the DVD with the install stuff... I hit ENTER and it went though a long process and told me to reboot. I was expecting a menu where I could select to run Diskutil and format my drive? When it rebooted, nothing was new or had changed. I assume I must get to the diskutil some other way, before I run the install? TIA

Ongeloof
Zonker, wow, you really pushed the boat out in your reply... If you mean you don't know how to get to disk utility, then click on the "Utilities" in the menu bar and select disk utilities. Simple. Then select your drive from he left hand panel and click ease. Does this help, or do you want to know the terminal way? Think Mark
SticMAC™
you were suppose to hit F8 not ENTER SticMAN I booted up off the DVD I made with kalyway_leo_10.5.1.iso and it gave me a prompt showing me the DVD with the install stuff... Patrick Vick
If I hit F8 I just get the same screen... I don't see a menu bar of any kind, just what looks like a terminal screen (like old DOS).
SticMAC™
Maybe explain step for step.... You boot of the dvd.... it comes up with the darwin bootloader (black screen with white lettering) This is where it give you 8 seconds to hit F8 - ONLY ONCE, NOT BEFORE, AFTER or MORE than ONCE! Then you get a bootpromt where you can type -v in order to watch the boot sequence in verbose mode, then after -v you hit enter, It will now boot through a bunch of files very quick then start with a "normal install" or show you what error is causing you problem...... If no errors it should take you to a Blueish screen with a turning rainbow circle, after which you have to press enter AFTER you have selected a language! Have you gotten this far yet? Patrick Vick
I thought I was doing something wrong... I hit F8, then used the -v flag, it got just past loading the kernel and then hangs for some time and then reboots. I will grab a pen and do it again so I can record exactly what it says. It gets to: ApplenForceATARoot: created ata channel 0 in native ApplenForceATARoot: created ata channel 1 in native ApplenForceATA: start ApplenForceATA: start ApplenForceATA: start ...and then hangs right there. I just tried again, this time it got past that part but still got hung up. There was so much data on the screen I didn't know what to write down, I tried to take some digital images of the screen but i need to load software to get thouse out of the camera. Ergh. I will keep working with it and report back. Thanks for your help!

Patrick Vick
I removed my X-Fi audiocard, and unplugged everything from USB (cept the mouse) and disabled multiple cores in my bios, and now I can get all the way to the diskutil! However, it doesn't see my HD. I think it's not getting the SATA driver working correctly. I don't have an IDE hard drive handy, but it does see my LG DVDR! Any idea how to get it to work with my SATA?
SticMAC™
you should have a setting in your BIOs to set the SATA to either AHCI or IDE just check and try both until you can load the correct driver! Patrick Vick
ACHI... hmm... I will check it out. I remember a bios setting for eSATA, I think, it was disabled.... So, I didn't see anything like AHCI in the bios. I'll try again...
MissingNo
Disable "Native SATA Support" or a similar setting in your BIOS. I had to do it with my Compaqintosh to get it running as well, and now I've got the Leopard purring (although it's kinda hot).
Patrick Vick
I don't see anything that sounds like "disable native sata support" in my bios. I will examine it again after I get some rest. Ut oh... it seems my onboard Audio is not being detected at all, strange. Perhaps it's an undocumented jumper on the mobo since this unit came with the X-Fi option. I may have to purchase some PCI or USB audiocard. Also, I am going to install this on another PC I have, and it might need a videocard upgrade, PCI (but not x16, it's a Dell Dimension E310). iAcid
I am using the Kalyway 10.5.1 install with my HD formatted to Fat32 and it doesn't show up with my hard drive, I will try changing these BIOS settings and report back though.
Patrick Vick
Nothing is working for me. My motherboard is an Alienware version of the XFX i680 board. HD doesn't show up. It's the nVidia i680 chipset on my motherboard, and the drive is SATA. It seems to have the on board audio totally disabled, even when the bios setting for it is enabled. I did order the system with a Sound Blaster X-Fi card, the docs that ship with it call it an Extreme Gamer version of the card, but it's an Alienware OEM part SB0770, so Creative doesn't support it (Creative drivers specifically do not work with it). When this system is ordered without the X-Fi card, it is supposed to have a nice HD audio solution built in to the motherboard. Perhaps it is disabled via an undocumented jumper on the motherboard? I need docs for this motherboard, time to email Alienware; breaking out my Alienware Support CD...
DJ McG
Does anybody here know how to solve the Still waiting for root device problem you seem like a smart group of people
Patrick Vick
you seem like a smart group of people I am phreakin brilliant, but some of the other slugs around here don't have all their marbles. Actually, I am just kidding... I just got here myself. You can tell these people are bright, it takes some tech savvy to care about Hackintosh at all I think. Okay. If I must I can get an IDE drive from a buddy, since IDE has working drivers. Then, if that works I can just get an SATA to IDE adapter for my 200gig and 250gig drives. However, I am going to have to leave one of my drives for Windows XP, unless I can get it functioning inside of OS X. Is that possible? Like a Virtual XP install within OSX? I have to keep XP for a few of my games and things. Also, I may need to purchase an audio solution to get OS/X to work, I hear it doesn't work with my X-Fi at all?! What to get? Also, does anyone know about iFeel MouseMan force feedback mouse drivers for OS X? I need the force feedback!!!
DJ McG
Yeah, I am SO CLOSE RRRRRRG I keep getting...'Still waiting for root device' and it is really bugging me. I screwed up my laptop twice, fortunately fixed it first time and am fixing it right now. I have to reinstall windows xp home sp1 (only restore disc I could find), and then figure out how to overcome the 'root device' error.
Patrick Vick
Well, it has been almost a week since I first posted. Other then messing with bios settings to trigger alternative drivers, it looks like there will not be a solution for this one. I am content going the IDE way, I'll go snag a drive today. I sure hope my audio works in the end, and everything else.
SticMAC™
You could also just stick the HDD in a USB enclosure and install to it, then when your done and everything is loaded put it back in your machine! Patrick Vick
http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/122-CK-NF68.pdf Finally, a manual to my exact motherboard. Get this: Alienware does not support their systems to the level of providing specific manuals for the motherboard, audio and video solutions they provide. So, it should work... or shall I say, people have gotten the i680 board to work in the past. I did upgrade the motherboard to its latest BIOS. I should have tried this with the old BIOS. DJ McG
I cant get to the Installer GUI at all. I get a Kernel Panic, Still Waiting for Root Device, or hangs BDS Root: disk*s* major *, minor * Visit this thread for more information. I am soooo close.
