magic0200
I came across this laptop at BB today and fell in love with the power. Especially the fact that Ram, CPU, and possible additional hdd can be used on this system (from what I've read on reviews). I am wondering if anyone has tried to put OSX on this beast or if anyone could help me find out details on the hardware that could see if this will load (lan, sound, and the 8800 Geforce GO). I have checked the wiki and the forums and have not found any information on this laptop. Thus, I'm wondering if maybe someone hasn't posted their findings yet. As a side note the laptop has a 1.3 camera and HDMI port (which I doubt we could get working), but for 1200.00 this thing would be my dream machine. I am asking for any info and thank you all for taking the time to read this, I truly appreciate it. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...9#productdetail
magic0200
After doing some homework, The only info I found at this point is that it looks like it running on the Intel PM965 Chipset which from what I've found in forum posts is a sketchy chipset to get running OSX on. On the ones that do work it looks like CPUIS=1 is required and also -V as well. I read that another member having his bios fixed on his ASUS with PM965 to include the dual cores. I would love to hear any thoughts on this please.
OverkillTheMighty
I am currently writing this from 10.5.1 uphuck install on the machine of your desire. Ok, so first things first.Network:Wired ethernet works fine, but the chipset used for the wireless card is not supported at all. This is fairly simple to fix though, just buy an internal wireless card that works with OSX and you are good (not to mention that there are actualy 2 mini pci slots in this bad boy and only one is taken up) dell makes one that is compatable with mac and N compatable, i think the model number is 1500.Camera:The little blue light that says it is working turns on when you try to use it, but all you get is a green or white screen.Sound:I have installed the iatkos dvd about 20x trying to get it working the way i wanted it to, and i swear on some of my earlier ones it was working, but it is not now, and i cant figure out how to get it back. It shows up in the system profiler fine and you can adjust the volume, but no sound.Optical Drive:I have not tested yet, but the OS sees it and says that it is capable of writing to all the media that i should be able to.Video Card:DONT use any of the video drivers on the install, i suggest doing the main system and speed step, most of the other drivers will cause a kernel panic. After install, go to Here and install the top option and i think the 512MB nvinject option, don't use the mobile option, because it works fine without it.HDD:Yes, this has 2x sata harddrive bays (i dont know if they are 150 or 300 but it says that 3 gigabit is supported) and one eSATA port all of which show up in the profiler.Everything else works beautifully.A good guide i found for this is at This site. Do exactly what it says, except install speedstep. Just for a reference, this computer kicks butt in windows. I have a desktop i paid about $1200 for about a year ago (i built it myself) and this computer games just as well if not better. The only reason this gets 1 point less in the vista benchmark test is because the ram is slower.Hope this helps. I have MS VIsta, Mac OS X 10.5.1 Kalyway, and Ubuntu linux working. I'm using the Grub bootloader from my Ubuntu install to go from any OS I desire. With the Kalyway Mac OS X, so far everything looks like it's working except for sound, wireless card, and the correct video drivers to get the max resolution. Can anyone help me with any of these? The things I haven't tried yet are eSata, firewire, camera, microphone, HDMI out and VGA out. The things I know that are working are USB, DVD drive, extra sata drive, ethernet port, and bluetooth. If anyone knows how to get the sound to work or the correct video card driver, let me know. Thanks!

KineticArc
Installed Leo4allv2 on same machine WIreless not working - expected, purchased dell one on ebay Webcam - green bonx issue Sound - not working via speakers USB headset works fine, so I'm happy for now and can use it while things progress. Same here. Have iATKOS v4 running on this notebook without wireless, webcam, or sound. Webcam doesn't bother me and sound doesn't bother me (as I have no need for a webcam, and I run a firewire Presonus FireStudio Project which actually runs with Mac OSX 10.5.4 and the 3.1.1 presonus drivers without crackles/pops/dropouts). What Dell card did you purchase, shane.reid? I'm looking at purchasing one, and wanted to know what you purchased and what all you had to do to get it running. bifnewman
i have a gateway p-6860 fx. i have mac running and am going to purchase the dell card on ebay. i have usb headphones witch make sound work. Is there any fix at all for the internal webcam? I would use this for ichat and photo booth(lol). I have my eyetoy that works with macam and ichat usbcam. My external iSight camera plugs through firewire and this laptop doesn't have firewire. Please help. Also can you like replace the sound card or something to get sound to work? thanks
KineticArc
As far as I know, you cannot replace the sound card on this unless you go with an ExpressCard sound card. You'll have to make sure the ExpressCard sound card is Leopard compatible though. Also, you could use a USB sound card, but you'll also have to make sure it is Leopard compatible. Also, this laptop DOES have firewire. It is a mini IEEE1394b port. This runs at 400mb/s, so if you are looking for a FireWire 800 port, then you will need to buy an ExpressCard firewire 800. But I'm running a Presonus FireStudio Project just fine for audio out of my mini-FireWire 400 port. It records audio just fine, though at the start I was having some problems with audio drop outs, crackles, pops, etc. If you want to plug a standard FireWire 400 port into the mini, just grab an adapter. They are compliant with one another, except the mini port does not provide power to the device. Therefore, you are required to provide your own power to the external FireWire device. jokinawa
Did you try this to get the sound working on the 6860? http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=86991&hl=gateway

Mycohl
i have a gateway p-6860 fx. Is there any fix at all for the internal webcam? My external iSight camera plugs through firewire and this laptop doesn't have firewire. Also can you like replace the sound card or something to get sound to work? thanks I have the same machine, and have just updated to 10.5.6 from the iATKOS 10.5.5 disc. To get the onboard sound working, you need to replace AppleHDA.kext with this patched version, delete AppleAzaliaAudio.kext, and also either use this HDAEnabler.kext or an HDEF EFI string. No word on the Gateway cam working as an iSight, but my laptop seems to have a mini-firewire jack right next to the speaker jack. Firewire shows up in System Profiler, although I don't own any firewire peripherals, so I haven't tested it yet. Yours doesn't have firewire? Right now, I'm digging around to see if anyone has done a Silicon Image driver for the eSATA. Both internal SATA ports seem to work wonderfully. The eSATA is apparently on a SiI 3531 chip, though. Other than that, everything seems to be working fine on this thing with 10.5.6. AppleHDA_IDT.zip
