well here is my problem. I want a smaller laptop. My current 15 incher just sucks to carry to the library and such. It doesnt even need to be powerful, just boot up quickly, search the internet well, have decent storage capacity, and be used for school work.

I would like to purchase a cheap 12" ibook or power book now for just this purpose and then later on this year (say three months or so) purchase a powerful desktop system (intel based imac) for more intensive stuff I want to do (home entertainment setup I've been discussing in another thread)

Problem being, once all of the major software is available for intelmac, will the instal disks be universal?

I mean, if I get a notebook now based on the powerpc, and then have the intel imac down the road, am I going to have to have to copies of any software I might want to run on both?

thanks

pedro

Pre-Intel macs (notebooks or whatever) will run Universal Binaries, old and new - hence the "Universal."

Apple, if they follow tradition, will encourage PPC and Intel support for the next 5 years. After then, expect any PPC outfitted Apple computer to be obsolete regarding current software and OS releases.

They have a lot of PPC iMac customers to keep pacified. I'd be insensed if Apple pulled the plug on a PPC machine having just bought one...

...and actually, my Mac Mini isn't a year old yet.

I also have doubts the Intel-inside Macs will be all that wonderful to own until 3rd quarter or later.

I also have quite a bit of ranting I get into when talking about the TPM installed inside the Core Duo (and I assume also the MacBook). In short, a TPM isn't anything I want inside a computer I pay for,
