Hello folks,

I'm finishing off my second G5 case mod. This time I made a much cleaner and neater one, but I just realised that the front panel is not the same that came with the older case.

This one apparently mates with the original G5 logic board. Not a big deal, can solder some wires to the contact and interface them to the motherboard, but does anyone actually know a pinout for this new front panel?

this info is in at least 3 separate threads. 1) the sticky at the top, 2) aqua-mac's g5 mod thread, and 3) nyquil's g5 mod thread

search is your friend

I'm afraid all the posts you talk about illustrate the pinout of the old model front panel, the one that comes with a cable.

This one attaches itself on top of the logic board, and I presume the pinout is different.

Never saw that front panel before! Can you take a closer shot from the very top. Is that the main connector plug at the top. Just wondering if it has 8 connections (or 6, 2 are not used on mac pro) or 6 connections. I can only assume this is from a later model G5.

I'll surely do that as soon as the panel arrives... I was planning to recycle the old well known panel from the old case, but that won't fit.

The G5 is indeed the very latest model, the one that comes with a rather large built in antenna for WiFi.

So... did anyone ever get this to work?

It's the late 2005 model quad G5 and I couldn't find a pinout anywhere.

Good news is: Only two pins missing :-)

Maybe someone can fill in the blanks.

This is what I got so far:

01 02 03 04 05 05 06 07 08 09 10 11

12 13 14 15 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22

Audio

USB

Firewire

Button/LED

unknown

01: Audio Left

02: Audio GND

03: Audio Right

04: ???

05: FIREWIRE GND (double)

06: USB VCC (+5V)

07: GND

08: GND

09: FIREWIRE TPB-

10: FIREWIRE TPB+

11: LED

12: Firewire FW802C IC VDDA (+3.3V)

13: ???

14: GND

15: FIREWIRE VCC (double) (+12V)

16: GND

17: USB D-

18: USB D+

19: GND

20: FIREWIRE TPA-

21: FIREWIRE TPA+

22: BUTTON

My numbering might seem a little odd, but 5 and 15 are actually double width contact pads.

Firewire signal isn't connected directly to the pins but to an Agere FW802C IC.

Soldering wires to this thing was insane!

I am also doing a case mod on the late 2005 G5. Has anybody figured this out yet?

  • 2 weeks later...

I confirm that by attaching a cable directly to the female firewire port works more than fine.

*Update on the rig*

I have added a gutted 6 ports FW800 hub inside the case, to which I have attached all the FW400 and FW800 ports of my case, and then directed them to the FW800 internal PCIe card.

This way in the future I can use also a motherboard without onboard Firewire and enjoy max connectivity :hysterical:

Hi everybody, i have the same front panel model... How do you connect button to motherboard and led to mother board? (i have 2 port for the button on my motherboard, and 2 port fort the led on my motherboard...) please help me, it's the last thing i have to know!

Thanks a lot

There’s about 5 GND connections (# 07, 08, 14, 16, 19), does it matter which GND to use for the pwr/led and USB? Or should I a specific GND? If that’s the case, can you please let me know which one you use?

Thanks a lot for the help.
