I tried previously to install 10.4.8 on an Athlon64X2 machine that cost me around $500.00 to build and was not successful. I lost interest for a while.

Recently I saw an article about the Kalyway distro and how easy it was to make it work.

So I downloaded the Kalyway 10.5.1 distro and started looking for a budget machine to try it out with.

Tigerdirect had a refurbished HP with Core2 Duo at 1.8Ghz, 320GB HD, 1GB memory, integrated video (Intel 950)- the same as mac mini, DVD burner and it comes with Vista Home Premium- all for $349.00 (after $50.00 rebate- which I didn't receive yet).

I put in an older 160GB HD (IDE) I had laying around in it and ran the install onto one of its partitions. It all went pretty smooth, but I didn't have network or sound at first.

After searching on this forum, I manually edited the AppleIONetwork kext to add my NIC's manufacturer and DEV id and got it to work. Here is the method: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=25477&st=0

Then I used the AppleHDAPatcher1.2 with ALC888-a.txt (from psychopat.free.fr/apple/AppleHDA/realtek/ ) and got two channel audio in and out working (enough for my needs)

I haven't tried to burn a DVD yet. If it doesn't work I'll edit this post later.

So, right now I'm sitting here playing with OSX and it all works fine. All in all it's a cheap and decent Hackintosh.

Anyway, here is the HP computer at Tigerdirect.com:

PS: I had to use a USB keyboard and mouse- the PS2 keyboard and mouse that come with the machine don't work with OSX (at least not at first during the install).

PS2 keyboards and mice work nicely in osx.

for most users just adding ApplePS2Controller.kext will do. if you're booting using pc-efi, get ACPIPS2Nub.kext.

search this forum for these two kexts and you'll find your solution.

good luck

Thank for the heads up on PS2 keyboards/mice.

But, like I said in the original post, the PS2 keyboard didn't work during installation. When time came to enter user data etc, I could not progress because the PS2 kext was not running. So I stopped, went to Staples and picked up an 'el-cheapo' USB keyboard.

It worked out in the long run, because I now have it hooked up to a little Belkin KVM switch (which only accepts USB keyboards and mice) to switch between my main XP machine and the Hackintosh.

BTW, the CD writing on the HP works and it makes a good CDR, except it throws up an error at the very end of the process, after the finished CDR is ejected. Is there a known fix for that?
