BossmanPL
SuperDuper Or from Windows Acronis sector by sector Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/88012-is-there-any-way-to-backup-everything-including-the-boot-efi/#findComment-627831 Share on other sites
neodoru
thanks a lot! so you are sure that it also backs up the BOOTING sector? SuperDuper doesn't make a full copy of the HDD. lstep
thanks a lot! so you are sure that it also backs up the BOOTING sector? SuperDuper doesn't make a full copy of the HDD. I have tried too many of these programs. The one that always works is HDClone. It's slow and does the things by sector. But it copies everything and it handles cases where the hard drives are not the same size. Ghost works when you go from larger drive to smaller, but even then it hasn't been totally reliable. Carbon Copy Cloner (or whatever the Mac util is) is like Superduper and doesn't appear to handle the EFI part of things. The result is that you don't get a bootable drive. Now, it may be possible to first install the EFI and then use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy. Not sure...The Acronis program seemed to require hard drives of the same size. Mind you there are different versions so... Anyway, I only trust HDClone at this point but it is really too slow (6 hours). There is a program that works for OSX on PC's, but it doesn't work with Leopard. ls Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/88012-is-there-any-way-to-backup-everything-including-the-boot-efi/#findComment-628246 Share on other sites

BossmanPL
Arconis 11 Home edition can be launched from Windows and it recoginze HFS partition, so it is able to backup it to a file - not nessesarly to other disc. That way you can always restore backup under Windows. Lstep is right, SuperDuper will not copy Efi ect..., - SuperDuper is rather for restoring not working system for example after installing update 10.5.2. Acronis is for restoring wheen you can not accually boot to Leopard in the first place. mister_doodi
I made an image of my hard drive using Disk utility by booting leo cd. Pretty simple and it's easy to restore. koonimo
u can do that by using any Leopard DVD (kaly or iatkos).........boot frm the DVD n when u reach the welcome screen n all that..... just go to diskutilities.......... then select the disk u want to back up then click New image then select where is it that u want to save it..........(i guess most likely to an external drive....just go ahead n select it...whether NTFS or HF+ its ok once u can write to it) then select image format n(normally compressed will do) and then encryption(normally none is or any of the options is also ok) then go ahead n save...........it will make an image of ur disk for u.........u can use it also to restore ur system or stuff like that..... i hope it helps.... kainz0r
Not usually. Use Carbon Copy Cloner and ensure that you select the option to make a block-level clone. koonimo
That is why u use the DVD instead of doing it in OS X.........cos if u do it in OS X u may get an error.......but the DVD sees the drive as an external..... just as ur external drive..........so it will make an image of everything........just as when u use it to format........ it formats everything.........it is the same as making an image with the DVD......... i hope it makes sense to u now........just try it....for urself n report back......u learn also when u do it urself... all the best thx man i know where it is, i only wonder if it really backup whole system including bootup sectors ect... unohoo
Because I didn't build leopard from a dvd I use Acronis but I like the look of HDClone - thanks for the info Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/88012-is-there-any-way-to-backup-everything-including-the-boot-efi/#findComment-647598 Share on other sites
unohoo
One of my leopard builds is a standalone with a 500gb drive which I intend having a backup partition for rescue purposes. I do not want it dual booting with windows and I did not build it with a leopard dvd so I do not have access to a rescue install disc. If leopard fails then I want to restore it from a hidden rescue partition. HDCloner didn't work for me - I used the pro version to copy the boot partition to another partition - it took 2 hours for 20GB of data. I didn't intend for the backup partition to be bootable but when it had finished there was no data there. So I am going back to Acronis booted from a usb stick - with rescue IDE drive - it hasn't failed me yet.. and it only takes 20mins to restore. Oh if only Drive Image were available for Mac!!!
