Hiya :D

After looking through the compatible graphic cards list i'm a bit confused. This is the thing:

I'm looking for a decent videocard that is AGP, has dualscreen and can run 1280*1024. Seems pretty easy, but, as it turns out some cards (that seem to be the same) don't seem to produce the same results. For example:

# Radeon 9600XT - no QE no CoreImage Vesa 2.0, 1280, 60Hz

# Radeon 9600XT Asus AGP (PCI ID 5964) Vesa 2.0@1024x768x32

This makes it extremely hard to go buy a videocard that works for me. It would be a pity go spend €50 on a card that doesnt work right after all.

So, my question is simple: Is there a card that is guranteed to be able to handle 1280*1024 in dualscreen-mode? :) I will only use it for 2D office work, so it doesnt have to be the latest of the latest. Price is important though, being lower = better :happymac:

The rest of my x86 OSX setup is working pretty well already. At the moment it runs on a Matrox G450 dualhead, but that one only runs at 1024x768...and doesnt actually support dualscreen.

Any help is greatly appriciated :)

To the best of my knowledge, dual-screen in Mac doesn't work at all. It reports having two displays in the System Profiler, but the Displays preference pane doesn't. Course, nobody has actually tried to do much about it, or if they have, I missed it...

Also, to get above 1024x768 resolution, you need a card supporting VESA 3.0.

Someone correct me if I'm horribly wrong...

Thanks for your reply

It would be a real pitty if dualscreen won't work, since i'd be kind of stuck with windows then. I need dualscreen for my projects :)

I noticed that there are ATI 7000 dualscreen mac-edition videocards available. Does the 'mac edition' have any advantage on the x86 platform?

No, dual screen doesn't currently work. I have two supported cards (onboard is supported, as is the PCI (by itself), but when I put both in, I can't use them at the same time.

Not sure about say a x800 pci-e (reportedly works normally) with say 2xDVI slots for dual.

The one dual that seems to work is a 915G+ADD2-N card.

At first: Hi to all!

As you can see, this is my very first post to this forum.

I have read here for a week or so while waiting for something to arrive ( ;) ) and now I'm trying to prepare everything to start installing Mac OS X 10.4.3 tonight.

@Xandrios: I was worried about the support of my graphic card because almost every post was regarding ATI cards. So you have written that your Matrox G450 works, but "only" in 1024x768? For me, this would be okay, because I use two Acer FP555 which support 1024x768 only and a single screen display seems to be allright to see things fly.

So whats about graphic performance? Is it a comparable to windows-speed? I know, the G450 is not the fastest card, but it's really reliable and at the moment I don't want to buy a new card.

Btw: Is there a running Java (at least 1.4.x) out there?

Kind regards from Berlin, Germany

@Cyrana: Not quite shure, but if you plug in a PCI- or AGB-card the onboard card is disabled. For my system, this is true. I can't use both cards together, neither from Windows or Linux.
