There's an option to turn that on and off in the System Preferences > Desktop and Screensaver panel. It's a checkbox at the bottom that says "Transparent Menu Bar".

That option doesn't exist for me, which is why I asked if there was some trick to it. I'm on an original 10.5.1 Kalyway DVD install with the 10.5.2 Combo Update (Kalyway), 9.2.0 kernel, etc..

Any other ideas?

Solved.

Even though your card says it's CI supported, it may not have all the requirements...

I have tired all these options - I still can't get transparent menus.

I *can* get grey background menus with Onyx, which is better - but I'd like transparent.

I have a Geforge 8800 GTX with 768 megs of memory - I know this card can do it.

Any other advice guys? THANKS!

If your talking about just the menubar, and not the menus... I had the same problem with my retarded ATi X1550. After installing the APE and Silk betas from unsanity I finally got a translucent menubar. Silk has an option for forcing menubar subpixel anti-aliasing, which is what worked for me.

You can get em here:
