try using -v as a boot option to see what its getting stuck on

also -x see if it boots in safe mode if so its probably just a .kext that needs deleting

I think its IntelPower... something that causes problems

It could also be the nvidia kexts thats preventing you booting in which gfx card do you have?

Ok: I don't know if this is related, but I tried out Leopard by installing it on an external USB drive with my MBP and I couldn't boot from it, the system just wouldn't see it. But when I installed it on an external with a Firewire interface, it worked as expected, installed and booted up fine.

I think it may have something to do with Firewire being seen first or USB not being initialized in time, I don't really know. All I can tell you is that all things being equal, a completely legit install of Leopard failed to boot on an external USB drive but worked on an external Firewire drive.
