I want to compare the popularity of this Pope with the previous one.

Personally, even if I am not a Catholic, I sort of liked John Paul II. He was a conservative, but he didn't interfere as heavily as Ratzinger does with Politics. He had also some sort of charisma.

Ratzinger, OTOH, is disliked by more people every day.

What is your opinion?

I was raised Catholic, but am no longer practicing or very religious in general at all. However, I did appreciate Pope John Paul II's works. He had good intentions, and wanted the best for the church and it's members. He was very open minded, and was responsible for relief efforts in Africa and such. I particularly liked his attitude towards evolution:

In his encyclical Humani Generis (1950), my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation, provided that we do not lose sight of certain fixed points....Today, more than a half-century after the appearance of that encyclical, some new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than an hypothesis.

Unfortunately I'm just not very familiar with Pope Benedict. If you don't mind explaining, what don't you like about him?

Well, he is extremely conservative. As a cardinal, he said that the church was right to condemn Galileo Galilei. He outraged the Muslims. He is very much against non married couples, {censored} people, abortion...

As a spiritual leader he has the right to have his ideas, but what is really bad is that he interferes heavily in Italian Politics and, they say, in German ones as well.

Pope John Paul was awesome. He was a true polak (Polish Power!). He even visited my old school. I, like erei, grew up Catholic, but am not religious at all anymore. Although I do use 'I swear to God' alot. That's the only thing I say remotely close to religion. Back on topic, the way John Paul viewed the world was the way I wish our president would, open-mindedly. I don't know much of the Nazi Pope but I know I was pissed when they named him. He looks like one of those sneaky bastards that you see in movies who end up being the rats for the mob. Which is funny cause his name is Ratzinger.

Excellent! :thumbsup_anim: (Ratzinger reminds also of Natzinger).

Personally, I think the pope is head of an unneeded institution with its thoughts stuck in the middle ages that should have been abolished. Centuries ago.

How true. Which also means that in Italy we are stuck in the middle ages (which is true in a sense, ruled as we are by a Pope King)
