Side.Step.Society
So, I've got this Dell 6400 something or other and right now, it's got Windows XP on it, which I'm getting mecha-sick of. I also have a Mac mini running Leopard which I was hoping I could use in assisting me in installing Leopard on this Dell. I've read a few guides and how-to's, but I've got "noob" blood flowing through me, which kind of makes it difficult. I'm not a mega-noob, I can work with Terminal and what have you, but all those instructions without great detail can get confusing. So here it goes. I've got dial up so just downloading the patched DVD won't work for me. But I do have a disc of Leopard 10.5 which I want to just rip to my computer and take it from there. Can anybody help me get OS X Leopard running on my Dell laptop? Thanks.
iScott
To make an instalable disk for your Dell you are going to need the BrazilMac patch file. It is only 13.43 MB, and you can get it at the "Bay" wink..wink. With dial up it shouldn't take that long.
Donw35
The specs on your Dell look good and its worth a try, its an interesting learning process for sure. If you don't care about the OS and data on the Dell you should be ok.
Side.Step.Society
Yeah, I've already applied the patch and burned a DVD, but when I try to boot off it with my Dell, nothing happens, works fine when I put it into my Mac. I'm sure I'm missing a step or something. Also, when I made the DVD, I was under the impression that my computer was SSE2 and I tried to put the SSE2 kernel on it, odds are I did it wrong, but is there any way I could check what kernel is on this DVD? If it turns out it is SSE3 on the DVD, what do I have to do to the laptop to make it run the DVD to start the Leopard install process?

Side.Step.Society
Kalyway DVD? Sounds kinda big to be downloading over dial up. Or is it just some small patch?
Side.Step.Society
Err, double post, whatever. When I'm ripping Leopard from my Leopard DVD in Disk Utility, what do I want for an image format? Compressed, read only, read/write, DVD/CD Master? Anybody know? iScott
Read/Write is what you want to do. I had that same problem when I first started this, you have to choose read/write. After that it will boot. Kinda a stupid question, but are you setting your BIOS to boot off of cd/dvd?
Side.Step.Society
Well, I usually just press F12 and use the one-time boot thing, is that wrong?
Side.Step.Society
Euuuuuughhhh! It just won't work! I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I set it to boot to DVD/CD first, it reads the CD for a bit, then it just starts loading Windows. I noticed when applying the BrazilMac patch I got a lot of "Permission denied" and such. And I don't know if this is a problem, but I don't have a DVD burner in my Mac so I just apply the patch on my Mac, move the patched DVD to my iPod and transfer it over to the Dell and burn it on there, could this be the problem? candykane
Dell 6400 sucks for OSX i have one its a real piece of {censored}. sleep mode will never work and well forget ever using the second core so turn it off in the bios be for in stalling or it will never boot. With one core disabeld , and now sleep mode it works under tiger. under leopard well if you have the intel video chipset well forget even trying the intel display driver has glitches, in the beginning its not so bad but in the end it realy starts to work on your nerves. Any way if your still going to install i used the flat image. real easy just download on an other mac use a special program to put that image on an other drive and just put the drive back in and watch it boot . if you have diabled the 1 core it will boot and everything works inc time machine. Side.Step.Society
I can't even get the installer to boot though, is the second core the problem?
