I just installed Kalyway 10.5.1 on a D975XBX2 with EFI but without using the vanilla kernal. This seemed to be the only way I could get the thing to boot. Is there any advantage to using EFI if you are not using the vanilla kernal? I thought the the whole purpose of using EFI was so you could use the vanilla kernal and get updtes from Apple.

i´ve installed kalyway 10.5.1 without problems on the D975XBX2 (aka badaxe2) with efi and stock kernel (vanilla). i just had problems with the built in sata marvell controller (not recognized). Now i´m using iatkos 1.0r2 with efi and vanilla acpi kernel. the only thing that does not work is sound (STAC9274D) and standby.

pc-efi (is not equal to efi, it´s an emulation) is the genial part of the darwin bootloader, actually a emulation of efi for pc´s. efi is for macs like bios for pc´s. bootcamp is the official emulation of bios under efi running macs.

pc-efi is installed on the harddisk, real macs start with efi from the "mainboard". efi=enhanced firmware interface

Michael, the BA2 motherboard is probably the most totally compatible boards out there for tiger and leopard...any flavor. Other than having to learn how GUID partitioning is just a bit different on our boards, there's almost nothing that can't run on them. I've installed iatkos, kalyway, brazilmac and the retail disk itself on my board...along with just about every major tiger version since 10.4.4. Tell us what all your hardware setup us and maybe we can walk you through setting it up with efi. There are several thorough tutorial threads in this forum just about our board. Pc-efi helps us to have a 'closer to real mac' experience. And, yes, we don't have to wait for someone to hack the kernel each time there's an update from apple.

My hardware setup is a D975XBX2 motherboard with an Intel 6600 Quad core processor,8 gigabytes of ram ,Nvidia 8800 GTS video card and 3 SATA hard drives 1 IDE hard drive and 1 IDE SONY DL DVD drive with a 530 watt power supply. I tried booting the Kalyway 10.5.1 dvd hit F8 and type vanilla to test if I can use the vanilla kernal and after a short time the machine just reboots. Now the computer seems to run the Kalyway 10.5.1 good except it will only boot if the Kalyway DVD is in the dvd drive. I either get a B0 error or a flashing cursor and it will not boot. I think it has something to do with picking MBR EFI when I installed Leopard. I did not choose the vanilla kernal because the machine kept rebooting ( I must have install the operating system at least 20 times with different combinations before I got it to boot with the DVD in the machine) Maybe you can help me iron out these problems ( I would really appreciate it) Thanks

Im realllly new to the whole low level mac usage (as in hackintosh) however it may stem from the partition not being active?

IIRC the OS partition needs to be made active manually. If youve already done this than forgive me as i said i am new but hopfully it helps :(

  • 2 weeks later...

I've tried iATKOS and kalyway on my badaxe2 with an e6600, 8800gts 640mb and I can't get it to boot. If I try to boot without the DVD I get the hfs+ partition error and if I try to boot with it it either just goes to the install, reboots as soon as the gray apple logo appears, or says something about a driver not being found and says the computer needs to be rebooted. I've tried EFI with and without the vanilla kernel. I tried both MBR and GUID. I tried to manuall install EFI from a usb-stick, but it always says the directory doesn't exist even though it does. I tried formatting the stick to FAT32 and FAT with no luck. If anyone could shed some light on what I'm doing wrong, I'd really appreciate it.

Athenos- I've had a couple different versions of Leopard on my computer, I've got the same board you have. The last install I did, I found and used this tutorial: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...4&hl=badaxe

It worked very well for me, hope it'll help you

Hi BJMoose,

It looks like you are the guy I need to talk to regarding running Leopard on my system.

Here are my specs:

I'd totally appreciate your feedback on my system.

I can't wait to get Leopard running on it.

Thanks in advance!
