hi,

just installed mac os x 1.4.3 with jas patches on my amd64 3200+ (without SSE3) & ati 9800pro (QE and CI are supported). everthing works fine, the only annoying problem is that the gui is pretty slow. for example scrolling in safari. have tried camino & firefox - same problem.

anybody has the same prob? i guess this not a 'feature' of mac os x :)

I am running 8f1111 10.4.3 on a 3-4 year old dell 4550 (SSE2 Pentium 4 2.66ghz, 1 gig ram, Ati radeon 9550) and the gui is very fast. I had a geforce card in there and it was a little slow but as soon as I put in the supported ATI card it is now very fast. Window resizing and scrolling in safari, and other apps is really smooth, actually as fast as on windows xp on the same machine. Maybe do a search for AppleTCMACPI and if you find a kext in the extensions folder delete that. Check activity monitor and see what your cpu percentage is. It should not be more than 1 -5 percent when it is idle. I am thinking that there is somethign wrong because with your hardware it shoudl be lightning fast. Also, try the maxxuss tuning package. That seemed to speed mine up a little. What is your Xbench scores?

try to use maxxuss sse2 ati driver. maybe it helps. there were some complaints around here regarding this issue (amd + ati). also, use maxxuss update 1.1 for coregraphics. should speed up things a little bit.

just did the updates. browsing still feels not as fast as i'm used to from win, but i think i gained a little speed thru the updates.

minimizing windows, moving windows and so on is fast, but when it comes to scrolling .. hmm ... it just feels a lot slower than in win. my user interface score (xbench overall score is around 42) seem to reflect that: 17 points

anyway mac os x is still a great system

thanks a lot for your help

  • 2 weeks later...

I am in the same situation as the OP. GUI speed is incredibly slow. THere is a lag between typing and the characters showing up on the screen. All gui features seem to run slowly. All the time I am running at about 4%CPU, so that shouldn't be the problem. My cursor also disappears or stalls at random times. I have noticed it disappears whenever I begin typing. Could this be some sort of hardware conflict?

I am on much the same machine as the OP:

Athlon64 3000+ (socket 939, winchester, no SSE3)

Radeon 9700pro

8F1111A Patched with Jas & Maxxuss patches

Gigabyte K8NS939 (Nforce3)

AC97 audio.

Other devices not being used by MacOS:

Audigy

3DFX Voodoo3

PS2 Keyboard

I noticed this problem only when I have the laptop running on Battery, is you try this, start the computer with A/C power connected, them everything is fast, just for testing if you remove the A/C you will noticed again this problem.

I'm using Dell D600 10.4.3 8f1111, works great but alwyas on A/C external

I think is an issue with Power management

Please check to see that is the same issue.

I am on a desktop, not a notebook, but I will check the power management settings. I installed the Maxuss 1.1 patch and it didn't seem to help one bit. I still nbeed to wait about 20 seconds for senences I write to show up all the way. It only displays about 2 characters per second when I am typing into text boxes (in firefox).

Okay, I feel like an idiot now. My Radeon 9700Pro drivers must not be setup correctly, because I am getting scores of 0.4 to 1.5 in the Quartz graphics section of Xbench. Everything else is coming up in the 80-180 range.

Anyone know if there is a certain driver I should install for the 9700pro?

I don't think this will solve your problem, but I am using a simple boot.plist edit to speed up my graphics a bit. It helps since I am running a Nvidia card and am stuck with VESA 3.0

You can change your graphics from 32bit to 16 bit... I think I read that it reduces the graphics processing overhead by 33%, and I for one (although I'm red/green colorblind) can't tell the difference in number of colors displayed.

I just changed:

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>1024X768X16@85</string>

I used to have X32, and I hear VESA doesn't do 24 bit, so 16 it is!

There's a whole thread about this on here somewhere.

Developer tools :)

once you install them you can also try messing with 'beam sync' - search the forum for that phrase.
