I installed osx off the dvd through the apple installation. I also had windows xp on a different partition. I thought I made the partition right in windows. When i had to select the disk i wanted to install osx to there were none. So i went to the disc utility and reformatted the partition i made in windows, then i installed osx on there. But now my computer only boots to OSX. I had teh chain0 file set up and the windows bootloader set up .

I tried fixmbr, bootcfg and some other methods. Nothing worked. Now i get missing ntldr.

So now i removed the apple partition

and am planning to remerge the partitions so i can reload the boot loader in windows. any command promtp merging partition programs?

this happened to me in linux a while ago also, but

the mbr is stored in the osx partition that i deleted dont ask me how that happened.. I get an error that it cant find the mbr becasue that "partition" f: is missing.

I think that merging the deleted partition with my ntfs one should allow me to fix the mbr.(what program to merge in cmd prompt?)

The next question i have now is how do i install osx from the dvd installation without messing up the windows boot loader? or is there some other bootloader to do xp and osx?

Yeah me and my brother had this problem on his laptop the other day, easily fixed

Slap in your xp cd and boot.

Go to the recovery console

type FixBoot

follow the instructions agreeing etc

FixMbr

follow again, do the checkdisk etc

then BootCFG

it'll ask which windows installation you wish to restore as the boot, type 1

bing ;)

i think these are the proper commands to use, but we did them in that order

and it worked for us, we then used the chain0 boot method to get osx back, jobs a goodn

Guest AaloPalto
i never did the chkdsk (check disk) maybe that would do something, im at work still, i will give your method a try when i get home

fixing the mbr is a lot easier when using a win98 boot-cd or disk.

simply type on dos prompt:

fdisk /mbr [return]

after that you should be able to boot windows.

i figured out the problem. My xp partition wasnt set to be active. That is why when i tried to fix the mbr after deleteing my osx parition it said that the drive was missing.

So i combined the partitions and set it to active and all is well, i can get back into my xp.

now im gonna start over again and install osx, ill update here when i figure out the dual booting stuff.

Thanks everyone for your help.

It keeps booting into osx first becasue that partition is set to be active. BUt if i push F8 when booting i can boot into windows xp through darwin. If i set the XP partition to active then it loads the windows boot loader. So at least i have some method to dual boot.
