Pentium 4 478pin 2.53GHz / Intel D845PEBT2 (i845PE chipset)

I have a really good offer from a friend to buy an Intel D845PEBT2 Motherboard and Pentium 4 2.53GHz CPU. I would be running 1GB of DDR333 and a 60gig IDE drive. Right now I've got an nvidia geforce 4 MX440 64MB, but would be in the market for an ATI card obviously.

My questions are...

1.) Will this Mobo/CPU combo work? Will it work well?

2.) Will it be faster than a 1.25GHz Mac Mini? (I am considering purchasing one instead of going the OSx86 route)

3.) Will the nvidia card work at all while I wait for the cash to get the ATI card?

4.) Which ATI card should I get? (keeping in mind, the cheaper the better, preferably under $100)

I am a hardcore geek, so simply buying a Mac and using it would lose the fun of the challenge, however, I don't want to buy into a losing situation. I have been a VB/C++/.NET developer for several years, but want to try my hands at Objective C on the Mac side of things -- so I want OSX running on something faster than PearPC lol...

Any help would be appreciated!

I've already checked theHCL, but didn't see any of my hardware there. The only thing I could tell was that it looks like a similar video card, the MX440SE will work, but with no CI/QE (although I'm not sure what that will mean for me). I was hoping someone who has been in the osx86 game for a while could say whether or not they though the older P4 and Mobo should work or if there is something they are missing that would cause them not to.

Thanks!

I have a Dell system that is socket 478 2.6 GHz HT Northwood running on 875P chipset

Except for video and no SSE3 I still get a score of 50 Xbench and it's fast

If I had video support I would probably score around 60 or better, thats about the same or better then a Mac Mini

I don't run Mac on my Dell, I only installed it to see if it would run.

I have to say it runs fine, faster then my laptop but I only used it for a couple hours.

I use my Dell as file server for my Xbox and I don't have a complete understanding of Mac file sharing yet.

So until I do it will remain as headless windows server sitting in the corner.

I also use it as bit torrent downloader, so I need windows for that because I can't find a good bit torrent client for Mac thats stable.

Maybe when Azureus releases a Intel build I may give it a go.

I use my laptop with Mac for my day to day use and I have had very few problems with PPC apps.

As time goes on more companies will release Intel versions of there apps, so rosetta will be used a lot less.

I plan on upgrading the Dell with a SSE3 CPU and a Ati 9600 if they crack 10.4.4 but right now there is no point.

I'm running OSX on a 875P chipset with a 2.8ghz p4 with no SSE3 and OSX runs faster than it does on a 1.5 G4. I just installed OSX 3 days ago and I haven't been in Windows since. My sound works perfectly and video is almost perfect. I have QE and CI supported on my 9800pro.....I just get some bad graphic tearing sometimes. I sort of fixed that problem using Mouse Pose. As for PPC apps; some work for me and some don't. When they do work, they can be quite slow. Having SSE3 would help a lot with this.

Sorry Heywire I got lost a little on what thread I was talking in.

Those parts should be fine

The Nvidia card will only run in Vesa mode so no 3D acceleration but you can use it until you get your ATI card

The CPU is it a Northwood SSE2 only or Prescott SSE3

As for a Ati card thats cheap for $100 you should be able to get a 9600 or 9700 and maybe even a 9800 if you find a good sale.

Good Luck

I'm 99.9% sure its SSE2 only, so that would make it a Northwood. (I was an AMD only guy until this morning, so I'm not to familiar with all of the cores) :poster_oops:

On the order of video cards... Is there a large difference between say a 9800SE and a 9800 pro? Obviously there is, but would it be a difference someone like me, a non gamer, would notice? I'll probably go for the cheapest ATI card that I can get, and still be usable...

Well, I'm posting this from Mac OS 10.4.3 on the system listed below... Amazingly enough, I didn't have to do ANYTHING! I simply patched the iso with the JaS 1111a generic v4.2b and did a completely native install to a blank hard drive. Once it booted from the install, everything was configured and working!

Thanks for the help guys!
