Hello, I have installed os's in the past with [some] success, but ofcourse I have also screwed up and have windows not boot... i have acronis trueimage and before atempting mac os (on 2nd harddrive) i would like to backup to the point of restoring windows booting; i have no concern for programs and documents, just being able to boot into windows is fine

thanks for the help

i've used trueimage to back up my C: drive, and restore it many times. you are only limited by the size of the separate partition you back it up to.

if you really don't care about programs and docs, i'd suggest you do a clean install of windows, disable your paging file and back it up with the trueimage bootable cd to another drive. should be a file under 600 megs with high compression.

if at this time you only have one drive, using something like partition magic or acronis partition manager, create a primary drive at the back of your hd of about 2 gigs, just for storing a C: drive backup. a little extra room is good.

you can even burn that to a cd if you are extra paranoid about screwing up your partitions.

good idea ulyanov77. :poster_oops:

hmmm, i should be more specific; i can always wipe the drive if i mess up; my point here is that i would like to be able recover windows without wiping EVERYTHING off of the drive, i just dont want to waste all of the extra dvds for programs; i dont know if this is possible tho

thanks

I think you should use a second HD or a separate partition on the boot HD to store your image. The second HD method is safer. This way you can image both your WinXP and Mac partitions in one with Acronis; it is also much faster than using DVDRs.

the only problem is my second hard drive is only 25 gb (and i planned to use all of this for mac purposes) now, if i could reduce what i needed to back up only to windows necessarys (and be able to keep everything else on the hard drive) then i would be able to fit it on the other hard drive... the problem isnt really what i put it on, rather what i need to back up
