You might want to look at this thread: Dell XPS 410 Resource Extravaganza, installing and running osx86 on a dell XPS 410

I think there are solutions for sound and video and disk controllers. Don't think there is a driver for the on-board network. Most just stick in a PCI network card.

I'd like to get the ICH8R controller working in it's native mode (Autodetect On - I think, whatever Vista uses out of the box).

Keep in touch. Maybe we can work through this together.

Hi,

- Ok for my screen and video card thanks to NVinject. Quiet easy one!

- Ok for the soundcard integrated, easy one :D

- My core 2 duo is still recognized as a solo processor. Any idea/solution?

For the remaining tasks (internet and ICH8R) I am still investigating.

The NIC driver could be a nice gift for Christmas...

I will post if I find some solutions.

Bye

Peyronnx if your on an xps 410 get on irc and got to irc.osx86.hu #10.5 and download the new sse3 kernel and install it, then go back on irc to irc.osx86.hu and download pc efi and google dsmos.kext what ever the newest one is and follow the included instructions on how to install it then open your software update install to 10.5.1 that will replace the hacked kernel with apples and System Profiler Will Show you computer as core 2 duo and a mac pro and with the PC EFI installed you can update with out waiting for it to be hacked. Then Your Computer Will Be As Close To A Real Mac as i think it can be for awhile.

Thanks a lot to everyone!

Everything works (with ToH RC2) +

- Sound: AppleHDApacher v16 and Dump

- Video: NVinject

- Network card: new one (a Realtek) bought

- EFI patch -> 10.5.1 update without any issue :)

Everything was possible thanks to your advices and this HUGE patch.

Nevertheless I still have some questions:

- For a XPS 410, should I use iATKOS or Kalyway new releases? Do you think I have to switch to one of these new releases?

- How could I solve ICH8 issues comptibility?

- What is the best for a XPS: MBR or GUID ?

- Do I have to definitely forget the RAID integrated in the BIOS?

Thx in advance

FINALLY!

I got it to boot to the Desktop where I can actually do things. None of the tricks I mentioned above did any good. What finally did the trick was entering at startup:

"Graphics Mode"="640x480x32"

After the system booted I saw this message:

==============

Welcome to Mac OS X

The Mac OS X Setup Assistant cannot be used with this monitor. To set up your computer, choose System Preferences from the Apple menu. To register your product, go to www.apple.com/register

Go

==============

Hell yeah! No setup assistant = no crash. You can't accomplish much at 640x480. I've rebooted several times now and set up my user account. I've got a lot left to do, including:

- Get my CPU recognized as a 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (instead of Solo)

- Address all 3 GB RAM instead of 2 GB?

- Get my Nvidia 6800 card driving my screen at 1680x1050

- Get sound working

- Get network working

- Get ICH8R drivers working

- PCI EFI, vanilla kernel, etc.

- Parallels with XP and Vista, run either OS as bare metal boot or from VM

- etc, etc...

Changing the resolution didnt' work for me, somehow it changed back to my native resolution automatically when the setup assistant ran. I searched all over the place and finally found a better way of skipping it entirely from post #278 in this thread http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...7069&st=260#

HI ALL

FOR ALL HAVE This issue (after the end of the choice, osx return on the video) :D

(commande are after ">" on each line, before you find a comment.

Start your pc and press F8, here ask to start in single user mode :

to do that, write >-s and press enter

Your osx start in console mode.

Here, start to check hard drive >/sbin/fsck -fy and press enter

Osx scan you pc and does to answer you : File system was modified.

After we does to mount all drives >/sbin/mount -uw / and press enter ; Dont forget the "/" it ask to mount all drives

Them, now we does to active and creat password for the root account >passwd root

The system ask for a new pass : enter it and confirm an other time when asking (press enter each time).

Now we does to do something to notify to osx that we have end the Setup. >touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone and press enter (Don't forget the "." before Apple).

And now you could restart >reboot and press enter

Now don't touch anything, osx boot and ask you to log in :P

Enter : log : root

and the pass you have choose before.

Enjoy ;)

Hi everyone,

Back with a lot of questions!

I have installed Kalyway 10.5.1 and now I face new issues although everytinh works more or less.

- Mute function doesn't work (AppleHDA Patcher 1.16 + Sigmatel 9227 Dump)

- Videocard (Geforce 7900GS) with NVinject 0.2.1 but fan works at full speed as if 3D applications turn... Weird?

- How can I activate SpeedStep?

- How get ICH8R drivers working?

It could be great if many from us can describe the way they optimize our XPS 410.

My configuration:

Dell XPS 410

Videocard: 7900GS

2Go Ram

Core2Duo 2,13GHz

2*250 Go HDD

Realtek Card for Internet/Network

Thanks in advance for your feedbacks

I get the following error when booting the ToH Leopard DVD:

Waiting for boot volume with UUID 244FD122-C089-31FF-B5D1-08B515FDA9C4

Waiting on <dict ID="0"><key>IOProviderClass</key><string ID="1">IOResources</string><key>IOResourceMatch</key><string ID="2">boot-uuid-media</string></dict>

Still waiting for root device

Still waiting for root device

I've configured my drives exactly like you indicated. In fact, I even turned off all the other ports so that I only have the DVDs to boot from (thinking that it was looking to the hard drive(s) and having trouble). I always press F8 on boot and enter -v -x.

Any ideas?

I get this error when I leave both SATA ports with DVD drives enabled in the bios. When I disable one of them, the "Still waiting for root device" error goes away.

Back with some improvements.

- Videocard OK with 10.5.2 kexts (see dedicated posts) => no more noise :(

Now I am only still focused on:

- Sleep/shutdown/hibernate not correctly work

- Mute function for the sound.

Any idea?

Thanks

I just wanted to put in my input on this.. I installed the kalyway 10.5.1 dvd.. and it installed flawlessly.. i have no sound or Ethernet though.. the way i bypassed the Loop video was quite simple actually lol.. I had 10.4.11 by mac.nub installed on another partition.. and instead of clicking transfer settings later.. i said {censored} it.. and transfered settings now which i would never do.. .but it worked haha. it continued on.. people having these issues.. try that.. and see if you can work with it that way. I am going to try to get ethernet working :S anyone know anything about an FA311 v2 netgear card?? i have that.. and onboard ethernet.. ughhhh. hehe thanks.. btw i too.. have xps 410. ROCK ON XPS 410!! Never fails

I solved the Migration Assistant problem and the NIC problem by spending $7.99 at newegg for this:

ENCORE ENLGA-1320 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI Ethernet Card 1 x RJ45 - Retail

I did a clean install to get it recognized. That may not have been necessary but I was having stability problems and hadn't done much with my install anyway. I think the stability issues were related to having too many sleep functions turned on. They're all off now and it seems fine.
