timeshifter
What do I need to install Leopard in this situation: System: Dell XPS 410 Processor: Core 2 Duo Chipset: Intel 965 family Drive controller: All SATA ICH8R, 6 ports, no IDE Nvidia 6800 etc... Here's what I've tried so far: Took retail copy of Leopard and followed Brazilmac method. On my first attempt I used the Brazilmac patch instructions to the letter. Had to hook up an IDE DVD drive to a USB converter and boot. Everything went along smoothly until I got to the point to pick the drive to install to. It saw no drives Second (and subsequent) attempt: Modified the AppleAHCIPort.kext's info.plist file to include the vendor ID string for my SATA controller. Now I could boot from the onboard DVD connected to SATA and I could my internal hard drives. I did the standard format and installs. I ran the post-patch procedures using many variations. Sometimes I'd add the stock Brazilmac post patch items. Other times I substituted my modified AppleAHCIPort.kext. No matter what I do or did I can't get the system to boot from my install. I've also tried the Kalyway "prepare for Leopard install" boot CD. If anything has been posted about this in other threads I've tried it. I see that SteveOh has a patch that looks like what I might need. It seems that I might need one or two more patched files for my drive controller to work in this setup besides the AppleAHCIPlatform.kext. But at this point I feel like I'm just throwing {censored} at the wall hoping something will stick. I spent almost all of my free time last weekend and quite a few hours earlier in the week futzing around with this. I'd like to do as clean of an install as possible, potentially using the new PC EFI stuff and unmodified kernels. I have a Mac Mini running Leopard, a Dell Inspiron 6000 running a 10.4.something release and several other systems available with various flavors of Windows. Plus I've got a bunch of spare hard drives, USB hard drives, flash drives, adapters, etc. etc. Could someone help guide me a little bit in this process so I don't spend the ENTIRE weekend again? 3vilution
Did you get it installed or no? Or is it installed and youre getting blinking cursor (not booting into leopard)?? timeshifter
I got it installed to the hard drive. Just can't get it to boot. If I select the third hard drive by pressing F12 during POST then choos If I press F12 during POST I'm presented with a list of boot devices. When I choose the hard drive I've formatted and installed Leopard on I don't see anything on the screen. After a few moments it must kick over to my Vista hard drive and loads the Vista boot loader. I have configured that using EasyBCD Edit. When I select the Mac install it halts with "Chain Booting Error_". timeshifter
If I disable every other device on the controller and set that drive as the highest boot priority I get "b0 error". My hunch is still that just modifying the AppleAHCIPlatform.kext's info.plist was enough to see that drive but not enough to make it boot on it's own. timeshifter
Since I never could get anything going with this install I'm retrying. There are two approaches now. Patching my DVD with Brazilmac and thestevo's patch OR using the flat image method. Brazilmac with thestevo PPF Can't get anywhere because I can't apply the damned PPF. The version I've downloaded for the Mac crashes under Leopard on a real Mac Mini and under Tiger 10.4.6 on a Dell laptop. I tried it on a PC with Vista and MacDrive and it appears to apply successfully. However, it must corrupt the image somewhere along the way. When I try to restore the image to my partition I get this error in Disk Utility: Restore Failure - An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory). Burning a DVD is not any better. I can burn it but I get: Darwin/x86 boot v5.0.132 3096MB memory VESA v3.0 256MB (NVIDIA) Loading Darwin/x86 Loading kernel mach_kernel Loading HFS+ file: [mach_kernel] from 4230450 Loading HFS+ file: [mach_kernel] from 4230450 _ The last line, flashing cursor, just blinks and nothing else happens. If I could just find a working PPF applier that worked on the Mac I'd be OK. flat image This will almost boot. Much further than I've gotten before. It boots right off the hard drive and begins going through the two text modes as everything loads. I get stuck at waiting for root device. I edited the AppleAHCIPlatform.kext's info.plist as I had before but apparently that's not enough. I'm pretty sure that if I could apply what thestevo's patch does to this install it should be good. According to his thread he modifies these files: IOPCIFamily.kext AppleACPIplatform.kext IOACPIFamily.kext AppleAPIC.kext Could someone help please??? Xenn0X
i have it working on my xps 410. have 2 hdd's on sata 0 and 1. 2 dvdrw on sata 2 and 3. and a 3rd hdd on sata 4. i installed the flat image and got the hpet error. but then i just tossed in the ToH leopard and used that to upgrade over the flat install and it works fine. only have to run efi somehow and upgraded to speedstep kernel due my e6700 was seen as single core and with new kernel as duo. my 8800 gtx works fine with nvinject and onboard sound work with sound patcher. only thing that does not work is the onboard nic. i just added a pci realtek and disabled the onboard. like i said i have a stable leo now. only have to run the efi Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/74215-installing-leopard-on-xps-410/#findComment-528969 Share on other sites
timeshifter
I get the following error when booting the ToH Leopard DVD: Waiting for boot volume with UUID 244FD122-C089-31FF-B5D1-08B515FDA9C4 Waiting on <dict ID="0"><key>IOProviderClass</key><string ID="1">IOResources</string><key>IOResourceMatch</key><string ID="2">boot-uuid-media</string></dict> Still waiting for root device Still waiting for root device I've configured my drives exactly like you indicated. In fact, I even turned off all the other ports so that I only have the DVDs to boot from (thinking that it was looking to the hard drive(s) and having trouble). I always press F8 on boot and enter -v -x. Any ideas? timeshifter
DAMN IT! I'm right back to where I was three weeks ago. I got it to boot from a USB-IDE adapter and DVD. When I get to the "Select a Destination - Where do you want to install ToH Mac OS X Leopard X86 RC2" screen there are no f-ing drives! Maybe I need to be on the exact same SATA ports with the exact same DVD drive (the stock TSS-something model DVD?) as you were. Maybe I don't have the same ToH version that you used. Anyone, please help! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/74215-installing-leopard-on-xps-410/#findComment-529540 Share on other sites

timeshifter
Now we're making progress. THANKS! Looks like the key was turning RAID off. So far I've installed it but haven't done any of the post install steps. It accidentally booted to the install instead of the DVD. It's hard to time the F8 key press just right. Anyway, it's in a loop of the Welcome screens - keboard ID, transfer from another computer, Welcome in multiple languages... lather, rinse repeat. I expect that'll go away once I run the other steps. Rob G
Ran the post-install scripts and i'm still in a loop of the Welcome - Before You Begin, etc. Does it boot to the welcome screen where you enter you info after The Install, If it does try making sure the drive is pluged in to SATA port 0 on your MB. timeshifter
First I get the Welcome screen animation where it displays "Welcome" in multiple languages. Then it asks me to identify my keyboard. Next it asks if I want to transfer information from another Mac (and I answer no) and click Next. It sits there for a long time, then gives the spinning beach ball, then comes back to the Welcome animation and repeats that loop. I'm pretty sure the hard drive was on SATA 0 with the DVD on SATA 1. If they were reversed could that make a difference? timeshifter
OK, it looks like I had the hard drive on SATA 1 during install and the DVD on SATA 0. Rob G
Ok That Should work as long as raid is turned to autoAnd if it still gets stuck it could be the Leopard Disk or file your installing from i will link you the one i used if you need If your using a usb drive to install from try unplugging it before you start up in to leopard after the install And If That Doesnt Work You May Just have to burn it and Install It From DVD Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/74215-installing-leopard-on-xps-410/#findComment-530617 Share on other sites
timeshifter
ALL THAT AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK End up in that loop as described above (and below) I've been installing from DVD. I've also used an external USB drive with other attempts. Could you link me to the file you used to install? HERE'S WHAT I GET AFTER BOOTING: I get the Welcome animation, then these screens: Before You Begin... Your keyboard cannot be identified and will not be usable until it is identified. To identify this keyboard click OK. ... Press the key immediately to the right... ... Press the key immediately to the left ... ANSI (United States and others) [Continue] Welcome In just a few steps, you can register your Apple product, set up your computer... select the country... [Continue] Select Your Keyboard Choose a keyboard layout, then click Continue [Continue] Do You Already Own a Mac? Do not transfer my information now. [Continue] After I click [Continue] it does nothing for a long time. Finally it'll go back to the Welcome screen and repeat the process. plmqaz
Hi, timeshifter. You almost get to success! But now, re-install! 1. Set raid on or auto ata (it depends your 10.4.x install disk) 2. Use a 10.4.x install disk boot to Welcome. (ex: kalyway disk) 3. From Disk Utility. Partition HDD with MBR schema, Erase! Remember your volume name (ex: Leopard) 4. Set raid to auto ata! Reboot to ToH RC2--Don't do partition and erase!! 5. Custom option... err uncheck x11 and other language, install... 6. Reboot with ToH again! Don't press any key! Get to Welcome, chose keyboard... blar...blar...(if you plug off network wire you will get more speed!). have done? No!!!! 7. Reboot!!! Reboot with ToH disk and press F8! Welcome again!! 8. Run Terminal. Key input blow: /usr/misc/script.sh YOUR_VOLUME_NAME (YOUR_VOLUME_NAME is: ex: Leopard) 9. RE-BOOT! Without damn ToH disk. More re-boot? I promise that is the very last! 10. Wow! Then you go to study EFI and other things. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/74215-installing-leopard-on-xps-410/#findComment-530897 Share on other sites
timeshifter
OK, I think I can fix it now. It seems that the next screen after "Do You Already Own a Mac" is the network setup. It has been suggested elsewhere that this problem happens because Leopard is trying to configure your network interface(s). There are two possibilities for my situation. One, I've got an unsupported network card on board. I'm going to try disabling that in the BIOS and trying again. May also stick in a more compatible PCI based NIC. Second, I'm using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse - the Dell Bluetooth multimedia keyboard and mouse combo (very nice). It has a little USB receiver and I was thinking that the system just sees it as a USB keyboard and mouse. However, maybe it is also seeing it as Bluetooth with a Bluetooth MAC address and trying to treat it as a network device and causing the trouble. This might make sense too because others with my same system apparently haven't encountered this issue. User profile: the other idea I found is to copy a /Users/username directory and profile from another Mac. This eliminates the Startup Assistant's need to create the profile which apparently causes the problem. Furthermore, I think that is why plmqaz and others have recommended to install 10.4.x first, as it'll already have a user profile when you go to install Leopard. timeshifter
FINALLY! I got it to boot to the Desktop where I can actually do things. None of the tricks I mentioned above did any good. What finally did the trick was entering at startup: "Graphics Mode"="640x480x32" After the system booted I saw this message: ============== Welcome to Mac OS X The Mac OS X Setup Assistant cannot be used with this monitor. To set up your computer, choose System Preferences from the Apple menu. To register your product, go to www.apple.com/register Go ============== Hell yeah! No setup assistant = no crash. You can't accomplish much at 640x480. I've rebooted several times now and set up my user account. I've got a lot left to do, including: - Get my CPU recognized as a 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (instead of Solo) - Address all 3 GB RAM instead of 2 GB? - Get my Nvidia 6800 card driving my screen at 1680x1050 - Get sound working - Get network working - Get ICH8R drivers working - PCI EFI, vanilla kernel, etc. - Parallels with XP and Vista, run either OS as bare metal boot or from VM - etc, etc... timeshifter
YMMV! Re-Installation!!Huh? Are you saying that if I reinstalled according to your suggestions all these loose ends wouldn't exist? Or are you saying that it would have been easier to install Tiger first then Leopard? In my case it was a lot easier to boot to 640x480 and manually do setup rather than find and download Tiger and go through all those steps again. peyronnx
Hi timeshifter I face the same issue as you : loop on the welcome screen I do not clearly understand the way you fixed it with you tip 640x480x32... How did you do it ? Could you give us more details and the way you finish the Leopard setup :(kext, EFI, etc). Thx in advance Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/74215-installing-leopard-on-xps-410/#findComment-534287 Share on other sites
timeshifter
When you boot up press F8 so you can enter options. You probably typed -v -x during the install from CD. When Leopard tries to boot from the hard drive and you get the options prompt, instead of -v -x do this: "Graphics Mode"="640x480x32" When Leopard starts up you'll get that message about not being able to run the Startup Assistant. That's OK! Once it boots to the desktop you won't be able to do much because nothing will fit on the screen. Just reboot normally and bump up your resolution and then go about setting up users accounts and other settings.
