I infact get a similar problem with the brazilmac disk. Darwin does it's stuff then it just stops once it's been on the grey apple logo for a few minutes. try hitting F8 when darwin loads then running it with -v and/or -x. Neither worked for me but try them, its worth a shot.

I'm having a similar problem. Install disc keeps stopping while loading up, then gives me a message saying:

Extension "com.apple.driver.itunesphonedriver" has no explicit kernel dependency; using version 6.0

Then another one comes up that says:

ERROR: Firewaire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full secure

Finally, another pops up that says:

still waiting for boot device

That last message then continues to appear below over the last every 2 minutes or so.

OK, here are my specs:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (runs at 2.40 GHz)

Motherboard: Intel Desktop Board DP965LT

Memory: 3072 Megabytes DDR2 RAM in total

* Slot #1: 1024 Megabytes

* Slot #2: 1024 Megabytes

* Slot #3: 512 Megabytes

* Slot# 4: 512 Megabytes

HDD Space: 726.60 Gigabytes in total

* Disk 0: 465.76 GB SATA drive (Split into 2 NTFS partitions: Vista Ultimate (32-bit) installed on 1, XP Home on the other)

* Disk 1: 149.05 GB SATA drive (Has 1 NTFS partition)

* Disk 2: 111.79 GB IDE drive (has 1 NTFS partition, and it is hooked into my PC through the SATA port, by using an IDE to SATA adapter)

Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS

Optical Media: 1 DVD +-RW drive, and a CD RW drive

USB 2.0 (and similar ports): 2 USB ports in front, 1 !396 (firewire) port in the front

about 6 USB ports in the back, no !396 ports in back

Other: A TV Tuner, A PCI Dial Up Modem, A card reader for various forms of storage, and a floppy drive

Added Facts:

I use a Dual Screen setup (A 20" and a 17")

My internet connection is from a cable modem to an "apple airport thingamajig" (I didn't buy it), which I connect to via a D-Link Wireless receiver

Now, back to the problem. I want to install Mac OS X on one of my HDDs so I can dual boot between XP, Vista, and of course, Mac. I want to be able to do it with the Vista boot loader (and I do not want to use VMware, but an actual installation of the OS), and so I have Easy BCD, which just so happens to support Mac OS X. Here's where things go downhill:

I have downloaded both a Tiger Install DVD(v10.4.6, I don't know which patch) as well as the Leopard ToH x86 9A581 RC2 iso image. Both have been burned to DVD. When I boot the Tiger DVD, I get the apple logo, and then a symbol which looks like a "no smoking" sign without the cigarette. After that I'm stuck there until I shut down the PC manually.

When I boot the Leopard DVD, Instead of getting the logo, I get the text based install, but from what I heard in another thread, that's normal. I then get the errors that are located at the top of this post.

If anybody has has any suggestions on how to get past this, I'll be most grateful.

Thanks in Advance,

John

All of those errors are normal for booting from an install DVD EXCEPT "Still Waiting For Root Device." I actually get the firewire error even booting into my main system and firewire still works.

The very first thing to try is booting the leopard dvd in safe mode. Hit f8 to enter install options and type: -x -v

This tends to slow down the boot but got me into the DVD.

Another thing that may be the issue is bad SATA/Motherboard compatibility in the drivers on the install disks (this does not necessarily bar you from using a SATA hard disk but it DOES make it difficult to install off of a SATA Optical Disk Drive). What motherboard are you using and is your disk drive connected via SATA or IDE?

I've tried the safe mode option -x-v. The way I type it is (dash, x, dash, v). Is that correct? All of my HDDs arehooked in through SATA ports. One of them is an IDE HDD, but uses an IDE to SATA adapter. Both of my optical disc drives (DVD, CD, etc) are IDE, and my motherboard is an Intel Desktop Board DP965LT.

i follow the install and i wrote some errors:

Extension "com.apple.driver.itunesphonedriver" has no explicit kernel dependency; using version 6.0

localhost.com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.systemstarter):failed to count the number of files in "/system/library/startupitems":no such file or directory

localhost diskarbitrationd:core RAIDServer[43]:18179 not responding

localhost mDNSResponder [48]: WARNING: sandbox_init error cannot apply profile 'mDNSResponder':no such file or directory

localhost kextd[47]:root filesystem is read-only;skipping kernel link data generation

i use Motherboard:GA-965P-DS3P

and a IDE hard drive

tnx again

None of those errors are abnormal. I get them every time I boot verbose (at least off the DVD, haven't watched for them on my finished install). It should eventually get to a point at which it throws up a <PANIC> message, thats the same thing as seeing the "You need to restart your computer". Somewhere in this <PANIC> message it should have the name of a file (usually ending in .kext).

Are you attempting to install onto the IDE HDD? If so it would be worth a shot to change it with one of the optical drives, let the HDD connect to IDE along with one of your Optical Drives. Install from the IDE Optical Drive to the IDE HDD. Once you're installed you may be able to go back to what you were using before (though the IDE->SATA adapter probably would work just as well for the Optical Drive).

I really don't know if it will help but I know that on my particular motherboard this is necessary. IDE Optical Drive installing to IDE HDD. Any SATA during the install process and it won't work.

OK, I'll try it. But should I disconnect the other HDDs?

Sorry, after the <panic> massage there is no name that ends with a .kext

this is what i get after the panic

I didn't, but if you're in there anyways it couldn't hurt and prevents you from accidently doing anything stupid.

It looks like it's having problems with your graphics card maybe? It's crashing loading geforce and Nvidia drivers. Are you on an 8800 by any chance? In any case try booting it with some of the following flags

  • -x -v
  • -x -v -legacy
  • -x -v "Graphics Mode"="1280x1024x32"

The error you're getting seems to be similar to the error I get booting a fresh install (or install DVD) without mac.nub's NVInject installed for my 8800. Perhaps if you boot safe or -legacy you'll get to an install screen.
