I have always been a Windows user because we use Windows exclusively at work, but my passion was for Unix/Linux and the open source movement. However, after discovering this forum, I have put together OSX86 and I absolutely love it. I am now looking at purchasing many Apple products. I already have an iPod Nano, iPod Touch, Mighty Mouse, and Apple Keyboard. I am looking into purchasing a Mac Mini and also Time Capsule.

Most of my applications are available for Mac. I've also tried VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop, although I don't use either of these now because of the availability of software on both platforms. I did find VM more stable, but I preferred the feature set of Parallels.

Cheers.

I only built my Hackintosh this weekend - and so far Monday the Vista machine has stayed off. That said my Mac system works perfectly except sleep (it won't wake up). The only thing I haven't tried yet is audio recording via the on-board sound and the webcam. I need to get the USB webcam working... but so far so good.

  • 3 weeks later...

I haven't switched back just yet, I installed it recently, I'm having trouble using Parallels but really I can just restart and use Vista if I wanted to, so no regrets here, on the bright side I know i can get Parallels to work if I formated:P Vista Drive but I don't wanna do that. Everything works perfectly.. although I still haven't tried usb but I'm sure I can get it working. It all depends on the hardware you have. You can always buy the right hardware for an OSX 86 machine in the end it'll be cheaper if ur wanting to spend less...

Never using Windows full-time again. Leopard and Tiger are purely fantastic and stable operating systems and for me, on Quad core, and will the larger number of multi-threaded high-intensity applications for Mac over Windows, my choice is simple - OS X day to day, games converted using Cider, VMWare for everything else (once a week I need to use it, ish).

I run Windows exclusively, although OSx86 was a very fun project, and allowed me to experience a full speed Mac at home, with almost full hardware support.

I will never buy a "real" Mac, because they're overpriced for their spects (but not as a machine), but I don't care about asthetics or design. That said, I wanted to try the latest (Tiger and Leopard), versions of OS X, on something better than the G3 that was gifted to me. So I've used it on and off several times over the last two years, but ultimately, I decided to give it up. Some things like incorrect hardware detection, or mouse tearing/finder glitches, made me realize it's not going to work right on 3rd party configurations. Sure the bulk of it works, and I could easily be productive, but I just don't trust it, or Apple, who could find a way to kill progress, then I'd be stuck moving back anyhow.

OSx86 is fun, and OS X is a great OS, but on standard hardware, I just trust and feel more comfortable running Windows.

I dual boot. on Apple I do my faster and nicer (photoshop, painter X and final cut studio) stuff and xp is just for torrents. I think Osx isn't geeky enough for many people.

OSX = Everyday people mixed with artists and wannabe artists.

Xp = Everyday people mixed with nerds and wannabe nerds.

Linux = real hackers and wannabe hackers.

Vista = The people that got it with their new computer and they don't know the can't go back to XP, and idiots that want to have the latest-greatest and don't need any actual productivity out of their computers, you know, those guys screaming "BUT IS IT VISTA READY?? I RATHER GET A VISTA READY PC!" on Best Buy.

Main machine was built using hardware recommended on the forum p5wdh deluxe sata2 etc and works 100% WITH 10.5.1 & efi. This is now my main machine and the old windows XP disk still lurks within thanks to the F8 bios boot menu. In fact I have my previous Win2000 disk in there too and my old tiger disk. Have not needed to boot any of them since installing leopard and use parallels to test windows apps that I still code. No going back for me.That said, I'm writing this on my vaio laptop that almost worked as a tiger but was too flakey so ended up back as xp. I think if you have good compatable hardware you will stay & if not stick with xp. Forget vista it's total spyware info harvesting garbage. If you can afford a macbook then go for it.;-)Main machine was built using hardware recommended on the forum p5wdh deluxe sata2 etc and works 100% WITH 10.5.1 & efi. I use both Vista and Leopard. I flip back and forth between them all the time. I am unwilling to completely switch as there are too many uncertainties -like, when will I load something that breaks everything next, when will my $450 8800 640mb card die because it overheated due to not really being supported (I don't know if that part will ever happen but I think about it), etc. etc. So, for the most part I do it for "fun" (comptuer still my hobby for the most part). Plus I'm a heavy PC gamer, so I'll always have a Windows box. I love the I-apps for making dvd's and browsing through my photos. I only wish my Outlook pst file would easily go back and forth. I love playing with Linux, but OSX is like a linux install that I can actually use and enjoy.

Idealy - I would love to get Apple to release a version of OSX for Non-macs... (i know dream on). Or, I become rich or win the lottery and I can drop $3K on a macbook or mac pro (one day, if my wife looks the other way long enough, it will happen)

For the last 4 years I was using OSX at work. I always tried several OS on my PC: some Linux distros, Win 2K and XP. When I started using OSX (back in the days of OS 9) I enjoyed the GUI of Mac OS but hated the limitations of the really outdated underlying concepts: fixed RAM for each application and a very poor multi tasking implementation. With OSX it was getting much better. The GUI was even better, the underlying *nix system modern.

Now I like the smarter way of getting things done in Mac OSX: I like iCal in combination with iSync (ever tried syncing your calendar on your mobile without Outlook?), I like BBEdit, Transmit etc. Over the years I found several applications for OSX which are running much smoother then any app of their kind on Windows. KDE or Gnome are quite interesting - but I need Adobe stuff for my work, so I have to choose between Windows and Mac.

I would love to buy a real Apple - but unfortunately I'm waiting since several years for a machine less powerful (and less expensive) than an Apple workstation and more expandable than an iMac or a Mac Mini.

Mac hardware is NOT expensive. Look at all the Mac Mini clones which cost ALL more. Even the workstations are not expensive - if you really need a machine as powerful as a Mac Pro. The iMac is also fantastic - but all those boxes are not the stuff I really need.

I don't want a nice small casing (Mac Mini) with no option for expansion, I don't need a built-in monitor (monitors last longer than any PC - why should I pay for one which has to been thrashed together with the box) and I don't need workstation power. The only solution is to build a HackIntosh until Apple will change their product line.

I need Windows for some very special stuff (some photographic related utilities) and my son is using Windows for his games. So I installed both XP and Mac OSX. My son boots Windows and I use OSX with Parallels.

I go back and forth between Leopard and Vista quite a bit. Mostly because I just get bored. I don't partition, I just have separate hard drives that I just switch back forth both on my laptop and desktop. I have found the OSX86 setup to be very stable (I haven't tried 10.5.2 yet). I do run Parallels and I love the coherence mode. I will probably actually focus more on one OS once Vista SP1 and 10.5.2 have been out for a little while longer. Right now both OSes for me have bugs, all very minor, but maybe that will change with the recent OS upgrades by MS and Apple
