Frankenberry
Can't get to the login window. Restart goes from grey with white apple screen to single user mode (black with white characters). Did some fsck'ing and saw that the HD was alright. Some questions now: is it possible to boot using another mac? I was thinking I could use my other mac as a start-up disk and then use disk utility. also, how do I start-up using the install DVD?

paperboy741258
It sounds like you have the single user flag in ur boot.plist. Boot with ur hd in the other mac and go edit the boot.plist file
A Nonny Moose
Start your Mac with the CD in there and hold down the Option key for your boot manager. You can probably edit the file in single user also using terminal commands also, but it's safer at this point to just reinstall it and STOP MESSING WITH THINGS YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT. Frankenberry
Said F-it, just bought Leopard. Thing is though, at first I just tried an upgrade and when I rebooted it went from grey screen to a blue screen to nothing. Light in the corner was on to let me know the computer was on, but no color whatsoever on the screen. I was able to get it into target disk mode (so I could look for the APE file to throw out), but it still wouldn't get to a login screen. I had to wipe the whole thing out to get it to work. WOW. After 4 macs and some odd years, I have never had to do that.
