As we all know, holding F12 eject the optical drive.

Drives with physical buttons will not eject by pressing these buttons, and must be ejected by holding f12 or dragging the drive icon to the trash.

Would it be possible to disable the physical button from ejecting EVEN WHEN A DISK IS NOT PRESENT?

could someone point me in the right direction?

thanks, Urby.

i know this is true on all the real mac desktops i've used, but on my MacOSX install, i can press the button, hold F12, or drag to the trash.

are you on x86 aswell?! because i JUST pressed my button and it opened. i put a disc in it. and then i pressed it agian and it opened and unmounted the disc aswell.

my OSX86 desktop with 2 dvd drives (one a recorder) will eject using the drives eject button only if no disc is present in the drive. I belive this is normal operation.

I suspect Careless might have a drive whose firmware doesn't properly support the locking command

you know what.... i'm wrong.

i remember ejecting the disc as macosx was loading. that is what made the difference.

yes my drive is currently locked right now with the Mac OSX dvd in the drive.

not ejecting =/

Edited by Careless

the cd drives that come in powermacs have the button disabled

i would say in a normal ide drive, just go in there, take the faceplate off and remove the actually button that lies behind the plastic one that you push.

but on a laptop that probably is not an option
