Wondering whether this config will work.

* Asus P5K (default, no wifi, no deluxe, no nothing)

----> RealTek ALC883 onboard audio

----> Attansic L1 Gigabit onboard ethernet adapter

* Intel E6600 2.4GHz

* nVidia 8800GTS 320MB gfx

* Hitachi 320GB SATA

* Pioneer DVD+/-RW IDE

* 2GB 800MHz Kingston RAM (DIMM1 and DIMM3)

Thing is, if I disable the horrible JMicron controller, my computer can't read the Pioneer drive. Buying a new drive is not an option - I bought this setup like a month ago...

Which route should I take? Could I risk a JMicron-on installation?

Thanks

Ah I see. If I install through Winny (Vista) by drive partitioning, will I need to disable JMicron every time I boot, or is this quirk only for the DVD drive?

And also, I've noticed the nVidia 8k series don't seem to have a viable kext. Will I get any video at all, or will it simply be reduced functionality?

  • 1 month later...

i also have a ide drive on my p5k-e (e for wifi, no other differences to p5k) and i could not install from it, however using the flat image i could get leopard to work (toh2 10.5 as well as native+pc_efi 10.5.1) and using vmware to install tiger (uphuck) worked too.

also, after the install, in the os, the dvd drive worked.
