tipnmo
So does anyone know if a powerbook needs a dc-dc board to operate? And will dc-in boards from other PB models work? from the pictures (which could be deceiving) the titanium dc-in plug looks very similar to the aluminum plug, minus the modem jack. The cables and all that look to be the same, also the ibook appears to have a similar dc-in board, and since it uses the same power brick, could i use the dc-in from a ibook g4? I ask this cause a dc-in for an aluminum PB is about twice the cost of a titanium or ibook dc-in. And this wont be used as a laptop so there are no concerns with case compatibility, or the need of a battery (dc-dc board.) sarahbau
Yes. If I remember correctly, it's under the hard drive, above the modem in the 12" PowerBook Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68666-questions-about-powerbook-parts-compatibility/#findComment-488265 Share on other sites
tipnmo
well its to the left of the hard drive, but i wont be using the logic board in a portable/laptop situation and was wondering if i needed the DC-DC board for the logic board to work.. I am looking for bare minimum here edit: Oh and is there any difference between the titanium and aluminum dc-in boards besides the modem connector, the aluminum is about twice as much as the titanium version Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68666-questions-about-powerbook-parts-compatibility/#findComment-488320 Share on other sites

The only one was Aluminum (though it came out when the 15" was still titanium). I thought what was left of the HD was just the battery connector, which connected to the DC board under the HD (and I think there is a cable from the DC in on the side that runs under the logic board to the DC board). Again, this is just based on memory, as I haven't opened one up in about 3 years. tipnmo
From what i can tell the DC-in only hooks to the logic board (on the underside,) and to the modem (on the 12" model), i knew that the titanium PB only came in 15" model, but since this will not be used as a laptop, i was hoping to cut some cost by not having to buy the outrageously priced dc-in for the PB 12". And i am starting to think, hopefully someone can clarify this, that I should be able to use the ibook dc-in board, it appears to have the same connector (dc-in to logicboard) and since it uses the same powerbrick i think it would work. I am halfway tempted to rip apart my GF ibook just to find out , she probably wouldnt be too happy tho. If anyone knows for sure, and can save me a reaming, please let me know edit: some links to pictures http://www.macrecycling.com/images/products/922-6130.gif Ibook ^ http://www.macrecycling.com/images/products/922-5655.gif Powerbook ^ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68666-questions-about-powerbook-parts-compatibility/#findComment-489082 Share on other sites

tipnmo
oh just thought of another question.. the hard drive cables.. again the 12" are $30 and the 17" is $9, anyone know if the 2 have the same connection to the logic board? edit: Not really important i found a decently priced cable for the 12" Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68666-questions-about-powerbook-parts-compatibility/#findComment-489206 Share on other sites
sarahbau
They have the same connection to the logic board, but the 12" PowerBook's cable is longer (laptop cables are almost always exactly as long as they need to be) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68666-questions-about-powerbook-parts-compatibility/#findComment-490951 Share on other sites
