macmaniac
So, thanks to Kalyway and the Green Demon, I have installed an evaluation copy of Logic 8 on my hackintosh. Being a long time registered user of Digital Performer, it wasn't difficult to "get around" on Logic. I have been able to run at least 43 or so Space Designer plugins at the same time (along with a slew of other misc. plugins) without any hick-ups or slow down. CPU usage with those effects with a 15 track playback was about 70%. I'm thinking I don't need quad-core.... But is Space Designer as good as Apple says it is? I have google-researched, and it seems that the general consensus is that Altiverb is somewhat (somehow?) better. Should I care? Altiverb is an extra $600.... I have collected a pile of Altiverb IRs, which apparently can be converted for use in Space Designer. Has anyone done this? Has anyone done side by side blind testing with the same IR? Or perhaps Kalyway could devote some of his considerable talent to providing an evaluation version of Altiverb. heh.. j/k What do you use, and why? solaar
I'm going to thrown in an alternative which is no convolution reverb. First off I don't use much reverb at all, if any. I reckon reverb or room should be perceptible only when it's muted and something seems to be missing although you can't quite put your finger on it... Being old school, I like those 'old' sounding emulations like the CSR suite which is amazingly close to the good old 480L. I don't know if it's just me being a sentimental idiot or if there's a point in this. Fact is, it does sound amazingly good if used sparingly. It's got that 'big studio' sound, fairly close to Lexicon. billykrush
It really depends on what your looking for in a reverb. long or short. Effect or just a gentle presence. Most producers i know use a few, because some a better at some things others aren't. I think that uad-1 plate reverb is the best in the biz. period. For long reverb thats my go to guy. For short reverb... PoCo Vcs3 is supposed to be the shiznitz. I cant confirm but industry headz can testify this fact. I'm still desperately looking for a short reverb but the plate 140 has a usuable one. Also i'm just getting to grips with Space Designer.... from what i hear. Its very nice. Easy to use and i can load heaps of them! Altiverb is so fiddly.. too fiddly for my liking. hope that helps ez Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65961-altiverb-vs-space-designer-which-is-better/#findComment-495903 Share on other sites
