This is a pure hardware question, and regards both Hackintosh and Windows users:

OK, I bought this PC check my sig.

I have:

2 X 500GB Seagate Barracuda [sT3500630AS] |and| 2 x 500GB W.D Caviar [WD5000AAKS]

I installed Mac OSX on the WD Caviar and Windows on the Seagate Barracuda.

I immidiatly noticed that the Seagate Barracuda is very noisy when compaired to the WD Caviar...

But I read somewhere that he gets better scores on reviews...

I'm in conflict, I can return the noisy Seagate Barracudas and get new 2 WD instead...

Question is - am I going to pay in perfomence??

Do any of you people have had any experience with those two HDDs?

Thanks

Sorry for the delayed response lol.

I have just received 2 of those WD 500gb drives and I am waiting to plug them into a RAID5 NAS.

I can confirm that Seagate drives are MUCH NOISER than WD drives. I have been using WD for a long time and when I got my first Seagate a year ago I almost returned it fearing that it was going out on me!! Seriously it was that bad! I NEVER noticed HD noise with my previous WD drives, but the Seagate makes all kinds of strange noises and the UPS guy dropping its box 6 feet on to hard cold concrete did not help my paranoia about its condition.

However I did not send it back because A) I needed it ASAP :( It passed every test I ran on it which was several mainstream and enterprize level hard drive tests and scans

At any rate I am going to stick with WD for now on. I have seen my fair share of failed WD drives, but they are quiet and none that I have owned personally have failed on me. I also suggest to anyone ordering hard drives to not get it through UPS and to always order it by FedEx by 2nd day or faster to get your packaged treated well.

@ mdg: it's possible the best drive for your asus-Board, isnt it?... I found two Guys here, which a very happy with the Barracuda, but both of them are using Gigabyte P35/P45 Boards.

I dont know, just a question...
