10.4.10 /w semthex 8.8.1 kernel. This is a Dell Optiplex GX280, Intel 915. Everything works great, everything is stable. BUT... Every game emulator that I have completely locks the system up when attempting to start! From what I can tell at this point, it seems to be related to USB devices.

I can use Nestopia if I DON'T load Emulator Enhancer, which adds USB game pad support to Nestopia. Once I try to load the USB support, the system locks up so hard that I don't even get a kernel panic. Tried to trace the process via terminal by running Nestopia binary directly under ktrace, but all I got was a zero output ktrace dump file. Is there any other process tracing tool for OS X? Can't seem to google any.

The game pad used to work perfectly under 10.4.8 once upon a time, but since then I've reinstalled 10.4.8 and then updated it to 10.4.10 using the incremental updates. I even tried reinstalling the extensions for IOUSBFamily.kext from 10.4.8, but the old kext didn't work any better. Yes, I did repair permissions and deleted the kext cache files before restarting. The odd thing is that System Profiler, and every other thing that probes the USB game pads? They cause no lockup, and have no trouble seeing either of the game pads.

So... ANY IDEA WHAT GIVES? This doesn't really seem like the kind of hardware issue that would cause a hard lockup.

EDIT: Confirmed it. I ran "Joystick and Gamepad Tester" utility, and the machine instantly locked up. Basically, it comes down to knowing what tool to use so that I can trace system activity up to the point where it locks up. Console/system logs haven't helped. I haven't been able to trace any of these processes successfully. I just don't know OS X debugging tools all that well..
