The Aliminium Powerbooks are great, my 1ghz model only recently met its ill-fated death thanks to a cup of coffee spilt over it by my girlfriend, ive been considering buying another one, because i dont really see the need to get a MacBook Pro.

You should consider a new girlfriend, because, boy, let me tell you, 3 isn't a charm. It's a damn waste of money.

Well if you put aside Dells Bios... I have had ZERO issues with my Inspirion 9400 , 7900 Go, 2 gig ram, Cor Duo 2.0gig processor.

Only issue I had was I had to go on ebay and purchase a dell 1490 wireless card to replace my intel wireless so I have native wireless support running. And mic in does not work, but bought a cheap $4.00 usb 5.1 sound device off ebay.

It has been running JaS 10.4.8 without any issues. Got everything working

Yes I do

However, I have to sleep the laptop first. I am currently on my windows OS, i will post a screen shot for you.

The way I done it was, Installed the JaS 10.4.8 with Semthex(sp?) Kernel that comes with the jas release.

dell don't make quality laptops though.

sorry, my opinion. (and I'm sure that of many others?)

By today's standards they're ok, about average, but they won't last. (at least without issues along the road)

shrug, I run World of Warcraft with all the settings on high, in 1920x1200 and with alot of action around I run at around 49 degrees c, with 90ish FPS, when im out leveling on my own without a lot of players running around I hit 180-190 mark.

My XBench was 119, doesn't a mac pro bench around 110?

Everything works out of the box except audio.... Couldn't ask for more, and also their Video Cards, at least my model does NOT have intergrated Video.... With the hda patcher audio out works, mic was never tested... i assume it does not.

I'm not talking performance or processing power etc...

I'm talking BUILD quality.

Solid, dependable machines.

I'm talking BUILD quality.

Solid, dependable machines.

I know exactly what you mean; and I've had my own problems finding build quality "nirvana" these days.

One of my first laptops was an iBook G3 dual USB (the white one). I don't know how they compare to the clamshell models, but mine was solid as a rock. The Macbook is a fine computer and I don't have any doubts as to its quality. The thing is, it just feels so delicate, and breakable. I don't think I could use one the same way I used my G3.

I also had a G4 Al Powerbook. Again, it was a quality machine but not what I would call sturdy. The edges of the display would "curl upward" after a while leaving a gap on either side when it was closed, and the aluminum would dent if you looked at it funny.

On the PC side, I used an '03 HP laptop for a few years, and it was just ok. I didn't baby it like I did the powerbook, so it had a couple of tiny pieces of plastic broken by the end of its life. From what I can tell by looking around in stores and at the laptops some of my friends have, the general build quality of laptops from companies like Acer, HP, Toshiba, etc. have only gone downhill.

The Dells that I've had experience with have all been pretty tough, but in a very cheap and plasticky way. For example, the Dell E1405 I use now is totally reliable and nothing's broken, but the plastic creaks if you put pressure on it and the whole thing feels pretty loosely put together. The only reassuring thing about it is the warranty with accidental damage protection.

These days, I'd really only consider buying a ThinkPad. :D

Sorry Synaethesia, I forgot to post that screenshot for you. Better yet, let me take a small video showing the various components. I will edit this in a few after I upload to a file server.

Edit: here is the video capture, my first ever one, please be nice =)

so, which laptop would you recommend to buy to install a hackintosh with leopard. isn't it that the nvidia 8800 is supported by OS, but not the other 8400/8500/8600.

I am looking for a not so pricey laptop (~700 bucks) that can run OS 10.5. It should have an intel 7300 cpu, is it good enough?

There are a other items to consider as well that rarely get mentioned:

1) Resale/depreciation: Real Apple product WINS so you paid $200 more upfront but a year later you'll get it back plus...

2) Coolness factor: like it or not, it exists. (If you think not then you're an Egghead which is cool too, ahh. . . isn't it?)

3) 100% moral peace with all powers that be. This has value. You should've saw me in Photoshop class at college with this Dell E1405 running Tiger

4)Your support of a better company. Also, If you got Windows with your generic notebook you just gave Bill a donation - you gonna sell that license?

5) You hard drive has never been formated with another system (Fat32/NTFS) which may be an underlying "mesh" to your newly Journaled wipe. 1x likely, right?

Thinkpads are still sturdy Machines. My X60 Tablet has gone through more abuse then some of my friend's Mac Books, and its still looks brand new. The only thing is, stay away from the new X61 Tablets. Those seems to have LCD Bezel Problems, and as sturdy as a thinkpad is, once you give it an Achilles heel, everything is ready to fall down from there. The only problem you might have with the thinkpad is the matte black color that you get. It's not going to turn heads, until you open the sucker up and run Leopard on a superior quality machine . Macbooks are great if you want OSX without the head aches. It wasn't too difficult for me. Just took 1 wipe, after which i got quite a bit to work. Only thing I am waiting on now is for power management to be fixed.
