Lactobacillus P
Hi there, My superduper G4 (look in my sig), which is running the latest Leopard next to 10.4.10 is in need of a harddrive upgrade. The original 30Gb drive is in situ, but there have been two drive additions, a 20Gb and a 30Gb drive. The cd-rw drive has been replaced by a philips DVD+-RW that is fully supported without modifications. I want to replace the three drives with a single big one, or perhaps leave one extra in situ for backup purposes. In the past Apples were pretty specific when it came to compatibility with drives, so I am curious what is the biggest drive that will work with my G4 digital audio? I've read that 120Go / 120Gb was the biggest size the ATA port was able to take. http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/machine...4-digital-audio But I've also read reports of users that wrote about installing bigger drives. I know about a sata pci card solution. Any other digital audio user did a successful hardware upgrade? Cheers, Mark Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65205-g4-digital-audio-harddrive-upgrades/ Share on other sites
karmatose
FWIW, I had a 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache Western Digital HDD in my B&W before I put it away in the closet. Macandstuff
Hi Mark1970, The info on the macupgrades site is correct, you will be limited to 128Gb on internal ATA. However, if this is enough space, you don't suffer too much in performance. The transfer rate of modern 7200 rpm harddrives is about 70 MB's a second. As the internal ATA is rated at 66 MB's a second, just about any 7200 rpm drive give you that speed. As far as compatability goes, sometimes Disk Utility won't recognize the new drive to format it. I have had some success with using OS9's Disk Utility first, then reformatting with OSX. Intech Speed Tools is also a solution and might be bundled with a drive purchase at some retailers-OWC in the US is one. Perhaps your Hacks could format the drive if they had an ATA connection, but I haven't tried that. For bigger drives, as you mentioned, a Sata pci card is the way to go. Then you could use a 10,000 rpm drive if you wished, if cash was no object. Regards.
