Hello :D

I currently have OSX and Linux on my laptop which is set up with Bootcamp. But I'm completely at a loss as to what I can do with OSX (really, for my needs it was a mistake). So.. My question is:

Can I pop in a Windows Install disc, remove the OSX partitions and install Windows there and still have my Linux install ?

In short, I wish to make a dual-boot setup with Windows and Linux only - no OSX what so ever - (although the bootcamp partition is ok, if it makes things easier).

Preferably, I'd like to accomplish this without having to reinstall Linux.

I hope someone can help me and I look forward to any answers I might get ;)

you should just be able to reformat the os x partition and just install windows on that partition :)

I'm feeling reckless so I'm going to try it XD

Anyway. For the sake of helping people who searched for solutions:

If you have Linux or somesuch installed already, boot camp won't run and thus you can't get the drivers.. or can you ?

Sure, hold CTRL then click the "boot camp assistant" icon (located in Applications -> Utilities) and choose "show package contents".

Then navigate through: Contents => Resources. Here you'll find DiskImage.dmg. If you know how to burn it, congrats to you. If you don't, plug in a USB-disk (or pen of 385mb or greater), double-click the dmg which will open it and manually transfer the driver folder to the USB-pen.

There you go, now you have the drivers on hand :(

Well, let's say I was curious as to the source of the Mac OS X praise. However, I tried the OS and frankly, it sucks.

Some may say I just might be wanting something different.. But.. I can do everything (save running Photoshop CS3) on Linux, and quite a lot more (programming for multiple OS's, gui-kits etc). - Linux is faster for me, Windows runs a few apps neither OS X or Linux has and.. Well.. I can't even use OS X to play the few (VERY few) media files that won't play right on Linux.

So.. having OSX is really useless to me, and I deeply regret having purchased a macbook now as well... (!!)

Anyway!! I boot some 20 times because it's rare for it to accept keyboard input when using the terminal (either windows or linux).. Then I installed XP - 4 times from a completely clean CD.. Just burned (I broke the original discs in my schoolbag, but I still have the license stickers for my PRO's!).. Anyway...

WHen I boot, I seem to be missing Hal.dll no matter how often I reinstall.. I see some people say that I must re-open boot camp, which means reinstalling OSX...

I __HATE__ this thing.. I should've just watched Itunes on windows and though: No way I'll get something APPLE makes.. But .. My mistake...

Anyway.. Any advices here ?

BUMP

In summary, installed refit (have boot camp too) whenever I attempt to boot WinXP (freshly installed, tried several times) i get a "missing hal.dll" error..

Ive checked diskutils and my layout is like so:

disk0:

0: GUID_PARTITION_scheme *149.1GB

1: EFI 200.0MB

2: Apple_HFS osx 21.0GB

3: Microsoft Basic Data Untitled 50.0GB

4: Microsoft Basic Data Untitled 77.0GB

disk0s2 = OSX

disk0s3 = Windows XP

disk0s4 = Where Linux will be

I can't boot windows due to this hal.dll bogus, I see multiple posts all over the net and no happy endings. Is there NO ONE who has ever fixed this ?

I cant help you regarding XP because my boot camp is running Vista Ultimate however I would guess you have a damaged disk (bad burned image). I have been doing PC stuff for years, never ran into that issue.

As far as OS X not being your cup of tea, I understand that to an extent. However you can install Flip-4-Mac (allows playing of .wmv files in Quicktime), and then hit up www.getmiro.com to play any other types of media you may have. I just got my macbook last week, and as a Computer programmer (CS Major in college right now) I can say that programming in X-Code is a blast. I do enjoy using the Linux environments as well, but X-Code has a nice all-around C++ compiler, and its free unlike Visual Studio (I know express is free, but thats lame).
