StealthMode
Hey guys, for some reason my system locks up randomly. I had this issue before when I had my old CPU installed, AMD 3200+ Venice, but it was an issue related to overclocking, so after I set it back to stock speeds it was fine. So fast forward to now, I installed a brand new AMD Opteron 165 and another gb or RAM, (bring my system up to 2gb) brand new 250gb HD, installed TubGirls 10.4.10 install and everything was great, except it randomly locks up. I am not overclocking at the moment, everything is at stock settings. System Specs AMD Opteron 165 DFI Ultra-D motherboard 2gb GSkil RAM (dual-channel mode) nVidia 6800GS (QE & CI working) 2x WD 250gb HD 1x WD 120gb HD NEC DVD-RW Any ideas? I had some issues where everything would hang and then lock up, so I reformatted and started from scratch and those issues are now gone, except for the random system lockup. Thanks for any help. StealthMode
Do you think it may be a kernel issue? Perhaps I am in the wrong forum..? mexicano1245
Do you think it may be a kernel issue? Perhaps I am in the wrong forum..? I also had that proccessor, and, after a lot of experimentation, I found that some socket 939 motherboards somethings got this "mood" that they will randomly lock up... My advise to you, as opposed to everything I know about hardware facts, is that just, let your computer rest (do not use it) in some 2 or 3 days, ... Next time you will turn it on, use your osx86 disc to format and install mac again, and It will never had that problem again. I know that this doesn't sounds logic at all, but It was what happend to me I used to have an Asus A8N32-SLI... and the first time I installed osx86 had no problems. Then switchet back to windows like for a month... after that, I buyed a brand new IDE hdd, and tryed like a crazy man to make it work for a whole week (chaching things at the bios, etc) In the end, I just "let it rest" for a couple of days and next time I tried, VOILA.... no more lock ups, not even a single one from that time. Hope this weird experience helps you out, post your results Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64245-10410-tubgirl-locks-up-randomly-after-reinstall-with-new-cpu/#findComment-457887 Share on other sites

Cool & Quiet is off, and I don't think I have any auto overclocking, at least not enabled. CPU throttlelimg have anything to do with it maybe? I have it turned off thinking that was causing an issue, but I guess it isn't doing much of anything either way. StealthMode
I think I might have fixed it. I flashed to the latest BIOS, and so far so good, no lockups, I have been multitasking for about a half hour, and it's smooth as hell.. Man I hope this is permanent I think it might have cleared up a few other issues I was having too, go figure! I guess this will be the test, have I jinxed it or not by posting... StealthMode
Can I disable ACPI without any problems? It is currently enabled.Ok, I disabled ACPI in the BIOS, but I got a kernel panic and wasn't able to boot into OSX, enabled it and it's fine again... My KB, and mouse are USB, plus I have my printer and camera as well. ascetic
I also have the same mobo, except i'm using X2 3800+ @2,8GHz. Its damn faster in Mac than Windblows. USB has to plugged in after boot. or else it will not detect. I have no lock up problem. But I have 1 big issue. I don't know if its a mobo related or software. I have my other partitions set as NTFS, and I have installed both macfuse and ntfs-3g. but sometimes mac detects some of them as Zero KB (no data) and won't allow me to read or write. though in windows the data is still completely available. anyone have the solution for this? many thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64245-10410-tubgirl-locks-up-randomly-after-reinstall-with-new-cpu/#findComment-467462 Share on other sites

nefilim
I had this problem too with 64 X2 4600 while using 4 gigs of RAM on Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard which only supports 1.8V RAM. My RAM were 2 x 1gig Corsair XMS DDR2-800 CAS 5 and 2 x 1gig Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 CAS 4. The problem was almost 100% repeatable during heavy disk I/O AND network I/O. I thought it might have to do with the CAS mismatch but the BIOS should use the slowest of the two's settings. I think the problem is that the RAM requires too much voltage (2.1 & 2.2V respectively). I can use either pair and everything is fine, the problem does not occur, but the moment I use both pairs of RAM the lockups happens. StealthMode
That sounds about right. My system would lock up as soon as I was moving stuff around, had Transmission open, and other stuff going on as well. So far it seems ok since I flashed the BIOS to the latest version. I hope it stays this way Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64245-10410-tubgirl-locks-up-randomly-after-reinstall-with-new-cpu/#findComment-468987 Share on other sites
macgirl
I also have this CPU, it is overclocked and never suffered from lock-ups, it has 10.4.10 with 8.10.1 kernel, on NForce 4 Ultra MSI MoBo, Nvidia 6600, Cool and Quiet is active, it does not have ACPIThrottle installed.
