well i have a old g3 ibook i use for school, and when i bend the display to close to all the way open ( about 145 degrees or so) the lcd goes dark. I can still make out what im going but it appears that the back light goes out. Other than at that position it is perfectly fine. Any ideas as to what can cause this? could it have anything to do with the hinge?

its not a major issue i just would like to know if there is an easy way to fix this.

thanks for any help guys

Colonel,

i had issues with my g4 ibook with the screen being blank, could hear it booting though. TV out didn't work either. Took it to a genius, told me the obvious...logic board. I did some research about it and found it tended to be a {censored} job when apple put the GPU on the board. over time stress fractures appear under the gpu and you loose your connection with the board => no video. The test was the basically add a large amount of pressure to the left side of the keyboard, just overtop where the GPU is on the board...it worked I had video (enough time to backup my data). I ended up sending my board to a company in illinois that charged me $60 to remove, clean, replace/reball the GPU then x-ray it to confirm the job,'m still waiting on getting it back (sent it about a week ago which is what they said was their turn around). I'll post my results once I get it back and reassemble my ibook but hell...$60 and my ibook works again... then they load it into a setup to test it. If it worked I'll PM you the companies info.

Sure, if you could PM me the info, that would be great. :hysterical:

ok, but my logic board is fine... its NOT the GPU card. Those symptoms are differernt ( no screen at boot, totally blank screen etc) I can still see what is on the screen when this happens... so it is related to the back light. NOT the logic board. The fact that my screen only does this at a certain position is evidence of this also. Could the hinge be too tight? Maybe pulling on a wire or something at this position? Or could it just be a backlight?

oh and i had a logic board prob on another ibook. Bought it off ebay from a company and they swore it worked "awsomely" Got it a week later and it was fried from the get go... sent it back and 2 months later still no fix.. kept saying they had shipping issues with the logic replacement. i finally got my money back.. ughh still pisses me off. Good luck with yours
