Hey,

Been a long time since I posted here So my 3500+ A64 system has died and rather than fiddle around trying to fix it I have decided to upgrade. I would like to have waited for a while to upgrade, but I really need a computer for uni so I need to get this done ASAP. I was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on what I have put together? Have I done anything blatantly retarded? Been out of the scene for a while :)

I am looking to play upcoming games like Crysis and Bioshock on my 2405FWP, which is why I am going for the quad core over an E6850. The mobo I chose because it looks like I will have a reasonable upgrade path with it in the future.

I am just using an 8600GT as an interim card until the next gen of dx10 cards come out. I am a little unsure about 2GB vs 4GB ram. Seems for now on 32bit a good 2GB pair is what you want? I'm not really prepared to run 64bit vista just now to really take advantage of the 4GB.

So here is my list! Any advice/thoughts would be great! Thanks in advance!

Intel Q6600

Asus Striker Extreme

Corsair T2X2048-64C4DHX 4-4-4-12 timings

OCZ 850w gamexstream

8600GT, asus atm -256mb but any point in the 512?

2 X 500GB seagate 7200.10

Vista Ultimate 32bit (upgrading from win2k)

the only "blatanly retarded" thing you chose was the vid card. you need something way more powerful than that for a 24in screen. at the minimum id say a 8800 GTX 640MB, if not a 720MB version. if you want to wait for newer dx10 cards then go back down the dx9 7 series and shoot for a 7900GT or a 7950. stay away from ATI's newer cards, they are total {censored}.

See, I would go with a P35 chipset solution at this time, or wait another month and get the new X35 I think its called chipset. The only problem with a hackintosh to date, is there is no support of Highend video cards with texture memory over realistically 256mb. After the 256mb mark it seems you have to flash card bios's and do some messy stuff. In addition, I wouldn't get too excited about any current direct X 10 parts because they have changed the hardware standard and are issuing a new standard called, you guessed it direct x 10.1. So in short, I bet apple knows this, is waiting for new hardware, new intel CPU's, then they will release a new Mac Pro, with a new fancy video card that will be akin to what you can get in a PC. when that happens, we will have a chance at getting some newer drivers and thus a better video support. At the moment, I would just build a 2nd PC for OS X use, and then use a PC for your gaming :P Just my opinion because thats what I ended up doing.
