clockworx
My laptop died 2 days ago, and I'd been wanting to try my hand at the OSx86 scene since I've been reading up on it for a while. I didn't want to spend a whole lot, so I saw the Toshiba laptop on sale I decided to take a shot at it. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1179877238966 First off, the bad: This is a low-spec machine. Centrino M at 1.6Ghz, which means single core and no virtualization. That wasn't a big deal for me, but just noting it. The good: -The computer comes with 512MB RAM, and I was worried it might by 256x2, but after running CPUID I found out it was a single SO-DIMM leaving one slot free. I ordered a 1GB chip for the other slot. -The computer comes with a GMA950 video card. Not the greatest card, but at least it's fully compatible. My progress so far: I installed with Uphuck 10.4.9i r3, and selected the GMA950, Azalia sound driver, Speedstep, and Power Management. Install went smoothly, no issues booting up initially. From bootup I had full resolution display with QE/CI and sound. The firewire port was also immediately recognized, and USB appears to be working properly since it recognized a USB disk when plugged in. After first boot, I also installed the Realtek 8101 driver for the onboard LAN, and that was also added once I went into network setting. Issues I'm currently having: Audio is ALC862. Audio is working, but it appears to ignore the headphone jack, i.e. audio still plays from the speakers when the headphones are plugged in. Didn't macbooks used to have a similar issue with audio in Windows? Wireless is not working. Device is atheros wireless 5006X, device ID is 001c, which I see is working for some people, though mine isn't. I get a line in dmesg about "AirportAtheros loaded unsucessfully". I tried the 5006X driver solution using the Apple 2007-004 update, but that didn't help either. No sort of CPU throttling or power management seem to running, and the machine seems to be running full power all the time. So far it's a good machine and I'm happy with my purchase. I was hoping someone else may have overcome some of these issues and had some advice. jari34
If I recall correctly Celeron doesn't support SpeedStep. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/61235-my-cheap-hack-laptop-adventure/#findComment-434483 Share on other sites
clockworx
If I recall correctly Celeron doesn't support SpeedStep. Edit: Yikes, nevermind....Apparently I confused the T5200 with the Celeron 520. I think CPU-Z noted it as a T-5200 core or something, which got me confused. Intel confirms that the Celeron does not have speedstep, as you said. In that case, I have no idea how Windows is throttling down the CPU. As far as I know there is no fix Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/61235-my-cheap-hack-laptop-adventure/#findComment-434852 Share on other sites
clockworx
Well, the adventure continues. -Wireless working, using the kext from 2007-004 update. chown'ed,chmod'ed, rebuilt the kextcache and that fixed it. -found out my CPU doesn't support speedstep (as noted above). CPUID confused me by listing it as a T5200. I am considering buying a T5200 on ebay just to get dual cores, bigger cache, and throttling, but that's for another day -I found a linux codec dump for the ALC862, but AppleHDAPatcher doesn't recognize it. I might try to pass that on to the AppleHDAPatcher developer to see if it can be supported. -Sleep doesn't seem to work for me (System refuses to wake). Any guesses on what to do with that? -I tried using PascalW's update to 10.4.10. The system went to the blue screen, but no further. I couldn't boot the system using the -f option to try to move in the old kexts, so I was pretty much stuck there. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it so far. For a $400 Mac OS X laptop, nearly everything works, and I really can't complain. I'm gonna continue working on the issues. I'm gonna continue working on the issues. I picked mine up this week for $349.00 at best buy. I've duplicated your results also -- the koolkal update also stops at blue screen. And I'm quite happy with this very inexpensive computer!! jjumper
I've done a little more testing on this and found a few issues. 1) The power manager doesn't recongnise being plugged in. It always shows battery and will display percentage but never time remaining (always says calculating....) Anyone have this similiar problem (using driver listed earlier in post)? 2) The function button with function keys doesn't work -- like dimming the display or making it brighter. 3) And on my laptop the head phone jack doesn't work at all. Audio through speakers works fine. Still -- most software runs flawlessly and have full video and wi-fi support.... Would like to get it working 100% though.... rsalazar
I have installed on my Toshiba A135-S4656 the ols uphuck 1.4i R3 and the new iAtkos v1.0i Everything works perfect on this cheap computer (I got it from best buy a couple of months ago for $350), For iAtkos I used EFI+darwin_boot and dual boot via MRB with windows vista. ONLY PROBLEM iN BOTH INSTALLATIONS (UPHUCK AND IATKOS): FANS DO NOT START RUNNING UNLESS THEY ARE RUNNING FROM BOOTING OR I UNPLUG AND PLUG POWER CORD AFTER BOOTING ON OSX. IF I FORGET TO DO IT THE COMPUTER BECAME HOT AND SHUTDOWN. I have removed all the fan and thermal kexts, power manager, battery manager, the problem is still there, any suggestions? thanks rsalazar Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/61235-my-cheap-hack-laptop-adventure/#findComment-554347 Share on other sites
