PopeBuggIX
I've searched a bit, but it's 3 in the morning, so I'm not at my best. I apologize sincerely if this has been asked before. Anyhow: I'm trying to put together a OSx86 system, and I'm trying to build something to serve as a server/xgrid processing slave (for final cut/shake/maya jobs), and as far as I can tell the best setup for that would be a dual xeon configuration. I've searched the internet high and low but can't manage to get a straight answer to whether or not the board/processor combination I've found is going to work. I don't see why it wouldn't but I've never done this before and from what I've read it seems like there's always a catch. I only have so much money to spend, so I really want to spend it on something that's going to work. Here's what I've come up with: either a Gigabyte 8IPXDREL-GG board with dual Xeon 2.4GhZ processors or an Intel SE7501CW2 board with dual Xeon 2.8GhZ processors. If you're wondering about the different processors, it's because I found these refurbished for significantly less than I'd pay if they weren't and the processors came with them pre-installed, so I see that as less hassle for me in the long run, as well as a nice price drop. I'm not really trying to find the most fantastic board around with every port a boy could dream of, since I really don't need to connect much to it since it would mainly be used for things I can control remotely over a network (xgrid, drive access, et cetera). All I really need to know is whether or not either of these is compatible with a decent build of OSx86 and if it will do for me what I want it to do (I'm a lot more sure of that part, though). From what I can tell so far, this is a psychotically helpful site, and I'm sure I'll be around here more often as I start trying to put this whole thing together. Thanks a ton. gittela
I´ve had it up and running for a while in a 3.06 ghz dual xeon, a slightly older one with sse2 only. It´s a cool cpu to run it on, lot´s of raw power. I can´t recall the chipset right now, will get back to you on that. I´m using the latest Uphuck release, and it seems fine apart from a strange bug somewhere that makes the dock crash once in a while. Haven´t been able to pinpoint it yet, might be some hardware error. Anyways, check the wiki for specifics on your particular cpu, but all in all it should work. cheers! bofors
Here's what I've come up with: either a Gigabyte 8IPXDREL-GG board with dual Xeon 2.4GhZ processors or an Intel SE7501CW2 board with dual Xeon 2.8GhZ processors. The Mac Pro is based on an Intel motherboard, but any dual Xeon motherboard likely to work fine. You are most likely to only run into problems with your audio output. Otherwise, it is trial and error here. You might try sending a PM to BearCat, he had Tiger running on a dual Xeon before.
